DAVIS, Calif. — Junior Noah Berry continued his strong season in singles, but the Cal Poly men's tennis team fell in its Big West opener on the road Friday to UC Davis, 5-2.
It was a back-and-forth affair in doubles as the Aggies' (8-5, 2-0 BW) No. 2 pairing won their match before the Mustangs, (4-8, 0-1 BW) who were without junior Colter Smith Friday due to injury, saw their No. 3 duo of freshman Aaron Eliscu and junior Joe Leather get a 6-2 victory. However, UC Davis' No. 1 pair were able to just come out on top over Berry and junior Fernando Fonseca, 7-5 to take the doubles point.
In singles, Berry, ranked No. 77 in the nation, made quick work of the Aggies'Andrei Volgin at the No. 1 spot, winning 6-2, 6-0 to even the dual 1-1. Berry is now 8-2 this season, all coming from the top spot in the lineup.
Fonseca then gave Cal Poly a 2-1 lead after he won his match at the No. 3 spot over Ryan Torres in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 to win his second straight match and improve to 4-5 this year.
UC Davis proceeded to win the remaining four singles matches however to go on and win the dual over the Mustangs, 5-2.
Cal Poly will stay in Davis to play a neutral site makeup match against Nevada Sunday at 11 a.m.
