Cal Poly Beats Sac State, Falls to No. 8 Hawai’i, No. 12 Long Beach Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Hosting the Bigger West Invitational at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex, the Cal Poly beach volleyball team went 1-2 in day one, sweeping Sacramento State 5-0, but fell to No. 8 Hawai'i, 5-0, and No. 12 Long Beach State 4-1.Jayelin Lombard and sophomore Piper Ferch cruised to a 21-13, 21-16 victory.
Playing at the No. 2 spot, the duo of senior Delaney Peranich and graduate student Brooke Golik continued their winning ways with a dominant victory, 21-15, 21-8. The No. 3 tandem of freshman Emma Zuffelato and junior Julia Soeller then clinched the dual for Cal Poly after getting a 21-15, 21-13 win.
Also picking up wins were the No. 4 pair of freshman Marina Warren and senior Kalee Graff (21-13, 22-20) as well as freshman Margo Smith and junior Susie Lloyd at the No. 5 spot (23-21, 21-13).
A few hours later, the Mustangs were back on the sand to face the No. 8 Rainbow Wahine (17-3). Hawai'i won in straight sets at the 5, 4, and 2 spots to clinch the dual. Both of Cal Poly's No. 1 and No. 3 pairs took Hawai'i's to a third set. However, both came up just short as both pairs lost the third sets 15-13.
In Cal Poly's last match of the day against No. 12 Long Beach State, it was close throughout with a total of five sets decided by three points or less. The Beach pulled out straight set victories at the 5, 4, 2, and 1 spots.
However, it was the Mustangs' No. 3 pairing of Peranich and Golik who pulled off a three-set comeback victory, winning in close fashion 14-21, 22-20, 15-13. Peranich and Golik are now a team-best 7-4 on the year together.
Cal Poly is back in action at the second and final day of the Bigger West Invitational Sunday starting at 9 a.m. against CSU Bakersfield.
