Cal Poly Concludes Bigger West Invitational with Victory Over CSUN

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly went 1-2 at the final day of the Bigger West Invitational Sunday at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex, falling 3-2 to both CSU Bakersfield and UC Davis before ending the day with a 4-1 win over CSUN.Piper Ferch and freshman Izzy Martinez got Cal Poly on the board first after a 21-14, 21-10 victory.
The Roadrunners tied things up after a win at the No. 5 spot before the No. 3 pairing of senior Delaney Peranich and graduate student Brooke Golik gave the Mustangs a 2-1 lead after winning 21-19, 21-19.
After CSU Bakersfield tied up the dual 2-2 after winning at the No. 2 spot, it came down to a third set at the No. 4 spot where Cal Poly's Julia Soeller and Emma Zuffelato came up just short, falling 15-12.

A few hours later against UC Davis, Ferch and Martinez once again scored the first point of the dual for the Mustangs at the No. 1 spot, winning 21-16, 21-6. The Aggies tied it up after a win at the No. 4 spot before Cal Poly's No. 3 pair of senior Jayelin Lombard and junior Piper Naess won in three sets, 21-14, 14-21, 15-10.
UC Davis tied up the dual 2-2 after just squeaking out a victory at the No. 2 spot, 22-20, 21-19. It then came down to another deciding third set, this time at the No. 5 spot where it was the Aggies just coming out on top over Marina Warren and Kalee Graff, 15-12.

The Mustangs finished their day strong against CSUN, getting all four of their points via straight sets wins. Lombard and Naess got things started at the No. 3 spot with a 21-12, 21-12 victory. They are now 9-9 together this year.
Ferch and Martinez then put Cal Poly ahead 2-0 after cruising to a 21-10, 21-15 at the No. 1 spot to finish the weekend with a 4-2 record and also push their overall record this season to 9-9.
Peranich and Golik officially clinched the dual victory for the Mustangs after winning at the No. 2 spot 21-19, 21-13. They also went 4-2 for the entire event and are 9-5 as a tandem for the season.
Cal Poly's fourth point came from the No. 5 duo of freshman Emma Zuffelato and senior Kalee Graff at the No. 5 spot, 21-15, 21-17 for their first win together.
Cal Poly will host the Mustang Invitational at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex next weekend, April 1-2. Saturday, April 1 the Mustangs will face UC Davis again at 3:30 p.m. and Tulane at 6:15 p.m.
