Cal Poly Beach Volleyball Hosts Three Ranked Teams for Mustang Invitational

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After hosting all the teams in the Big West last week, Cal Poly beach volleyball is back at home again this weekend to host four teams, three of which are nationally ranked, for the Mustang Invitational. Competing in the April 1-2 event at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex will be No. 9 Cal, No. 13 Washington, No. 20 Tulane, and UC Davis. The Mustangs (7-17) will face UC Davis and No. 20 Tulane on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. Then on Sunday they will go against No. 13 Washington at 12:30 p.m. and No. 9 Cal at 3 p.m. On Saturday at around 6 p.m. prior to the match against Tulane, there will be a ring ceremony to celebrate all the members of the 2022 Big West championship-winning team. Live scoring will be available for fans to follow all four of Cal Poly's matches. Those links can be found on the schedule page. The Mustangs are coming off a 2-4 weekend at the Bigger West Challenge, collecting wins over Sacramento State and CSUN. They did however have a pair that went 4-2 for the event in senior Delaney Peranich and graduate student Brooke Golik, who played at both the No. 2 and No. 3 spot in the lineup. They are now 9-5 together this season, the best winning percentage of any duo on the team. UC Davis is 13-6 so far this season, the second best record in the Big West. At the Bigger West Challenge last week, the Aggies went 4-2, including a 3-2 win over the Mustangs which marked the first time in program history Cal Poly has lost to UC Davis. With a 13-5 record and wins in three of its last four matches, Tulane comes into the week at No. 20 in the national rankings. They have two wins over ranked opponents this year in No. 12 Stetson and No. 19 South Carolina. This will be just the third all-time meeting with the Green Wave. Cal Poly is 2-0 in the first two meetings, with the last happening back in 2019. Washington is 10-8 on the season and is coming off a 3-2 performance at the Tiger Beach Challenge in Baton Rouge, LA. In that tournament, they beat Southern Mississippi, New Orleans, and Spring Hill College while falling to No. 4 Florida State and No. 5 LSU. The Huskies' No. 1 pair of Chloe Loren and Natalie Robinson are among the top in the NCAA with a 14-4 record. Cal Poly is 1-1 all-time against Washington, beating them at home last season 4-1. The highest ranked team in this weekend's event, No. 9 Cal is 14-5 this year. They are coming off a 2-2 weekend last week at the Fight in the Fort in Fort Worth, Texas with wins over No. 15 FIU and Missouri State. They also lost to No. 1 TCU and No. 6 Grand Canyon to make their record 6-5 against other ranked teams. The Golden Bears have three pairings who have already reached the 10 win mark in their primarily No. 1 pair, No. 2 pair, and a duo that has played six matches each at both the No. 3 and No. 4 spots. Cal Poly is 2-6 all-time against Cal and will be looking to avenge a loss at home to the Golden Bears last year. Following this weekend's event, the Mustangs will head to Bakersfield next weekend to face CSU Bakersfield and Pacific Saturday, April 8 at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
