Cal Poly Hosts All Big West Teams for Bigger West Invitational
3/22/2023 9:00:00 AM | Beach Volleyball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly beach volleyball has played 16 of its first 18 matches to start the season on the road. That will start to change as the Mustangs will play their next 10 matches at home, starting this weekend when they host all six other Big West teams at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex for the Bigger West Invitational Saturday, March 25 and Sunday, March 26.
The Mustangs (5-13), who are in the 'others receiving votes' category of the latest AVCA Coaches Poll, will face No. 8 Hawai'i, No. 12 Long Beach State, CSU Bakersfield, UC Davis, CSUN, and Sacramento State throughout the weekend.
Saturday, Cal Poly will start the day against Sacramento State (3-2) at 9 a.m. They will then face No. 8 Hawai'i later that same day at 3 p.m. before finishing the day against No. 12 Long Beach State.
Then on Sunday, the Mustangs will go against CSU Bakersfield at 9 a.m., UC Davis at noon, and CSUN at 4 p.m. There will also be several non-Cal Poly matches throughout both Saturday and Sunday. Things officially kick off Friday at 4 p.m. when CSU Bakersfield squares off against UC Davis.
Admission is free to all the matches. For fans not able to attend, live scoring will be available to follow. Links to those can be found on the beach volleyball schedule page.
The Mustangs are coming off arguably their best performance of the season this past weekend in Tucson. They went 3-1, beating Texas A&M Corpus Christi, an NCAA Tournament team last year, Southern Mississippi, and Arizona Christian before falling to No. 17 Arizona.
Cal Poly's No. 3 pairing of senior Delaney Peranich and graduate student Brooke Golik have won three straight matches and are 5-3 together this season. Also going 3-1 over the weekend was senior Jayelin Lombard to notch nine total wins for her on the season. She has now moved into third all-time in program history for career individual wins with 80.
The matches this weekend against No. 9 Hawai'i and No. 13 Long Beach State will already be the third time they've faced both teams this season. The Mustangs fell in both matches to both the Rainbow Wahine and Beach March 4 and 5 in Laguna Beach.
Last season, Cal Poly went 4-2 at the Big West Challenge in Long Beach, losing to Hawai'i and Long Beach State. The Mustangs went on to get their revenge in the Big West Championships by beating both teams, including Hawai'i twice, on their way to winning the program's third straight Big West title.
Following this weekend's event, Cal Poly will host the Mustang Invitational April 1-2 at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex where they will face UC Davis again, Tulane, Washington, and Cal.
