CLOVIS, Calif. — Cal Poly track and field captured 15 event victories and Shelby Daniele sprinted into the top marks list in the women's 200-meter during the Bulldog Classic hosted by Fresno State on Friday and Saturday.
Over 40 Mustangs made the trip north to battle competitors from the host Bulldogs, CSUN, CSU Bakersfield and Fresno Pacific at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The hammer throw and javelin were held Friday while the rest of the events were contested Saturday.
Daniele stole the show for the Mustangs, running the fifth-fastest women's 200-meter time in school history (24.06 seconds) to capture first. The performance comes just two weeks after Daniele moved to No. 7 all-time in the 100-meter dash, posting a time of 11.78 at the Cal Poly Open.
Daniele also ran the second leg on Cal Poly's 4x100 relay team that took first Saturday. Anisa Rind, Melody Nwagwu and Jadyn Snaer ran the other three legs and the quartet finished with a time of 45.45, just 0.31 seconds away from the school record in the event (45.14, 1982). Lariel Henley won the high jump with a personal best (5-3.25) and Chase Kubinski took home second in the event.
The Cal Poly men dominated the Bulldog Classic, winning 11 events. Zack Volpe soared to a personal best (16-5.25) and a title in the pole vault, while Noah Bustos (pictured above) leaped a personal best of 22 feet, 11 inches to win the long jump.
Joey Souto won the 400 hurdles, and Lucas Lacambra, Rory Smail, Oscar Gomez and Anthony Benitez placed first, second, third and fourth in the 1,500.
Quinton Alexander and Carson Smith finished first and second in the 800, and Rory Devaney tossed a PR of 168-5 to win the discus. Corban Payne grabbed first in the shot put (52-10.25), Nick Gammal launched a PR (187-7) to win the javelin, and Bailey Jones and Tibyasa Matovu secured first and second respectively in the triple jump.
Cal Poly won both relays (4x100 & 4x400) on the men's side, and Tyler Esteves (100), Ben Laughlin (3,000) and Chase Walter (javelin) each took third in their respective events.
Maya Holman earned second in the women's 100 hurdles and tossed a PR in the shot put, while Lexi Evans was third in the pole vault.
