Weststrate Clinches 4-3 Win for Mustangs Over BYU Friday

PROVO, Utah – Sophomore Bastiaan Weststrate came through when it was needed most for the Cal Poly men's tennis team, clinching the dual-winning singles point to give the Mustangs a 4-3 win over BYU Friday in Provo.
The Mustangs, who earned their first win of the young season, started off the match by taking the doubles point over the Cougars (1-1). Cal Poly's tandem of Fernando Fonseca and Ben Keyser won their match first at the No. 3 spot, 6-4. BYU then won at the No. 1 spot before the Mustangs' No. 2 duo of Noah Berry and Colter Smith sealed the doubles point with a tiebreaker win 7-6(3).
Once singles got going, the Cougars tied up the dual 1-1 after getting a victory at the No. 4 spot. Berry, ranked No. 55 in the nation in singles, then took the lead back for Cal Poly after he won his match at the No. 1 spot over Wally Thayne, 6-2, 7-6(6).
Leather gave the Mustangs a 3-1 lead after winning at the No. 2 spot in come from behind fashion over Jack Barnett in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.
BYU eventually came back to tie the dual 3-3 after getting wins from the No. 3 and No. 6 spots. It then all came down to Weststrate at the No. 5 spot. Weststrate lost an epic first set battle of a tiebreaker that went 22 points, 6-7(10), before coming back to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the dual for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly will look to make it a 2-0 week when they travel over to Salt Lake City Sunday to take on the University of Utah at 11 a.m. PT.
