2023 SCHEDULE
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- This fall, Cal Poly will play six football games at home for the first time in five years.
Coach Paul Wulff's Mustangs will play two non-conference games and four Big Sky Conference contests inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Cal Poly released its 2023 schedule this week and it includes the Mustangs' first game against a non-Division I opponent since 2011.
"We have an excellent schedule for Cal Poly alumni, boosters, and friends," said Wulff. "Eight of our 11 games are in California. We will provide many opportunities for Mustangs across the state to be able to attend our football games.
"We have three out of state Big Sky games, Portland State, Eastern Washington and Montana State," Wulff added. "We always look forward to going on the road to play in hostile environments. As always, we will take it one game at a time and get ready for our first opponent, the University of San Diego."
Wulff's first game as head coach at Cal Poly will be against San Diego on Sept. 2 and the Mustangs also will host Lincoln of Oakland on Sept. 16.
Cal Poly has an 8-1 mark versus the San Diego Toreros, all but one of the games in the series taking place in the last 11 years. The Lincoln Oaklanders are preparing for their third season of football and played Portland State and Southern Utah in a 2-8 campaign last fall.
The Mustangs will host UC Davis (Sept. 30), Idaho (Oct. 7), Northern Colorado (Oct. 21) and Weber State (Nov. 18)?for Big Sky Conference games.
"We are very fortunate to have six home games this season," said Wulff. "We're excited to be able to open the season at home and have five of our 11 games with California schools.
"As always, the Big Sky schedule is extremely tough but one that we will be ready for," Wulff added. We welcome the challenge. This will be a fun and exciting season for our players and program."
Cal Poly's remaining non-conference game will be played Sept. 9 at San Jose State. The Spartans, under seventh-year head coach and former Cal Poly assistant coach Brent Brennan, posted a 7-5 mark last fall, their second winning season in three years, including a trip to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. San Jose State also was 7-1 in 2020 with a visit to the Offerpad Arizona Bowl.
San Jose State owns an 8-2 advantage in its series against Cal Poly. Last meeting was in 2017, the Spartans winning 34-13 on a hot 107-degree day at CEFCU Stadium.
Cal Poly's Big Sky games on the road include Portland State on Sept. 23, Montana State on Oct. 14, Eastern Washington on Nov. 4 and Sacramento State on Nov. 11. The Bobcats and Hornets shared the conference title last fall with 8-0 marks.
The Mustangs have played an FBS school in 16 of the last 17 seasons, excluding 2020 when the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cal Poly has won five games against FBS schools — New Mexico State in 1997, UTEP in 2003, San Diego State in both 2006 and 2008 and Wyoming in 2012.
Montana State, Sacramento State, Montana, Weber State and Idaho all were 2022 NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoff qualifiers — the Bobcats reaching the semifinals before falling to eventual national champion South Dakota State.
Cal Poly will not play Big Sky members Northern Arizona, Idaho State and Montana in 2022. The conference fell back to 12 teams last fall with the departure of Southern Utah to the Western Athletic Conference.
Cal Poly will compete in its 12th Big Sky season this fall, capturing the conference crown in 2012, its first year in the Big Sky.
