UC Davis Surges Past Cal Poly in Final Minute
2/25/2023 7:19:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior forward Brantly Stevenson scored a team high 13 points – his 11th double-digit scoring game in the last 12 outings – but the Cal Poly men's basketball program, following a second half that featured 11 lead changes, sustained a 58-52 setback to UC Davis Saturday afternoon inside Mott Athletics Center.
Senior forward Alimamy Koroma added nine points for Cal Poly (7-23, 1-17), which took a 52-50 lead following a dunk by junior center Bryan Penn-Johnson. UC Davis guard Elijah Pepper, however, sank two free throws with two-and-a-half minutes remaining to tie the scoreline for the seventh time during the second half.
Cal Poly, however, missed jumpers during its next two possessions before fouling Pepper beyond the three-point line with 58 seconds to play. Pepper, who finished with a game high 20 points, sank all three attempts.
With Cal Poly facing its largest deficit to date on the afternoon, Mustang sophomore guard Hayden Jory's three-point attempt fell short. With Cal Poly forced to foul to regain possession, Aggies guard Kane Milling sank one throw and Pepper added two more to finalize the scoreline.
Cal Poly led Saturday's matchup by as much as 21-15 with four minutes to play in the first half following a three-pointer from graduate guard Chance Hunter. Holding UC Davis to a 32.3 (10-for-31) percent first-half field goal mark, Cal Poly took a 26-24 lead into the break after Stevenson hit a buzzer-beating baseline jumper.
Stevenson and sophomore guard Julien Franklin each grabbed a team best six rebounds for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly closes the regular season at UC San Diego (Thursday, March 2) before hosting UC Riverside (Saturday, March 4). Tip time both evenings is 7 p.m.
