SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Former Mustang and Big West champion Molly Ross recently joined the Cal Poly track and field coaching staff as a volunteer assistant.
Ross, a member of the Cal Poly track team from 2017-21, is assisting the Mustang hurdlers this spring, a discipline she dominated throughout her collegiate career.
The school record holder in the 60-meter hurdles, Ross went out on top in her final season as a Mustang. At the 2021 Big West Championships, she captured an individual title in the 100 hurdles, placed second in the 400 hurdles and helped Cal Poly's 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams finish first and third respectively. Her efforts allowed the Mustang women to secure their first Big West track and field title in program history.
Her name is painted all over the Cal Poly top marks list as Ross currently owns the third-fastest 100 hurdles time (13.55) in program history and eighth-fastest 400 hurdles time (1:00.31).
When Mohammad Nourani joined the coaching staff in August as an assistant coach specializing in sprints, jumps and hurdles, he started searching for any alums in the area that would be willing to help out the program. He connected with Ross and she jumped at the chance to give back to her alma mater.
"I think a part of me really just truly loves track and loves to be around the sport," she said, "and the past year where I wasn't part of the team … I was really missing it, so when this opportunity came about, I was very excited."
Ross is also the last Mustang from the sprints, jumps or hurdles group to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminaries, punching her ticket to the postseason in 2021 in the 100 hurdles.
Ross has deep ties to the current track & field team having competed with many of the student-athletes during her time as a Mustang. Ross said she's enjoyed watching the transformation of the program over the years and is thrilled to play a part in its continued growth and success.
"I just want to share my knowledge and hopefully be a role model for some of the women and men out there on the track," she said.
Ross graduated from Cal Poly in 2021 with a bachelor's degree in biological sciences and is currently an orthopedic medical device representative.
