Fourth Quarter Push Propels Mustangs to 61-50 Win Over CSUN

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Down 47-46 with just over five minutes left to play, the Cal Poly women's basketball team finished the game on a 15-3 run to seal a 61-50 win at home over CSUN Saturday.
Three players scored in double digits for the Mustangs (7-15, 4-10 BW), who held the Matadors (5-19, 4-10 BW) without a three for the game and out-rebounded CSUN by nine.
Sophomore guard Annika Shah finished with team-highs of 18 points and six assists while shooting 60 percent from the field and going 4-6 from three. Graduate guard Oumou Toure added 14 points and five rebounds while junior forward Natalia Ackerman recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
CSUN got out to a 9-2 lead to start the game but the Mustangs were able to come back and eventually tie it 19-19 heading into the second. Cal Poly, who shot 43 percent from three for the game, continued its momentum from the end of the first into the beginning of the second, scoring the first five points of the quarter.
The Matadors held the Mustangs scoreless for the final three minutes of the half as they went on a 6-1 run to tie it 29-29 at halftime.
Tied 31-31 with 8:32 left in the third, CSUN went on an 8-2 run over six minutes to go ahead by six. Cal Poly was able to finish the quarter on a 6-2 run of its own to trim the deficit to two heading into the fourth.
After going back and forth the first five minutes of the fourth, the Mustangs held CSUN without a field goal for four of the final five minutes of the game as part of a 13-1 run that allowed Cal Poly to pull away for the win.
The Mustangs, who play three of their next four games on the road, will travel to face CSU Bakersfield Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. Cal Poly beat the Roadrunners 50-37 in the first meeting earlier this season.
