Balanced Scoring Leads Mustangs Past Roadrunners Wednesday
2/15/2023 10:31:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Behind a balancing scoring attack that saw six Mustangs score six or more points and a strong defensive effort, the Cal Poly women's basketball team pulled out a 51-42 road victory over CSU Bakersfield Wednesday night at the Icardo Center.Jazzy Anousinh led the Mustangs (8-15, 5-10 BW) with 10 points to go along with three assists. Graduate guard Oumou Toure finished with nine points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
Sophomore guard Sydney Bourland had a strong game on both ends of floor, nearly posting a double-double scoring eight points, pulling down a career-high 13 rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Guards Annika Shah and Maddie Willett both added seven points apiece while junior guard Taylor Wu added six points.
Just as its been all season, defense was the calling card for Cal Poly, limiting the Roadrunners (6-17, 3-12 BW) to 33 percent shooting from the floor and 13 percent from three.
Cal Poly got out to a 12-6 lead midway through the first quarter before CSU Bakersfield came back to cut the Mustang lead down to two heading into the second.
It was a back-and-forth second quarter as both teams struggled to score. With 2:18 left in the half, Shah hit a three to give the Mustangs a three point lead, one they kept the rest of the quarter as Cal Poly held the Roadrunners scoreless the remainder of the half.
After a third quarter which saw Cal Poly push its lead to four heading into the fourth, the Mustangs used an 8-0 over a three minute span midway through the final period to expand their lead up to 11 with 3:33 left to pull away for good.
For the Mustangs, the win marks their first road victory of conference play and the first time they've won consecutive games since February of 2021.
Cal Poly will look to make it three in a row Saturday when hosting Cal State Fullerton, who currently sits one game ahead of the Mustangs for sixth place in conference standings, at 2 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center. The Mustangs will also celebrate the careers of seven players prior to the game starting at around 1:40 p.m.
