SEATTLE, Wash. — The Cal Poly track and field distance program tore up Dempsey Indoor on the opening day of the Husky Classic on Friday.
Highlighted by Carissa Buchholz (pictured above) running a school record in the women's 5,000-meter, 11 Mustangs recorded personal bests.
Buchholz crossed the finish line with a blistering time of 16:23.14, breaking the indoor women's program record Amanda Olla established in the 5,000 two weeks ago at the UW Invitational (16:42.63). It was an over 30-second PR for Buchholz and the time would rank ninth on Cal Poly's outdoor all-time list in the event. It's also the fastest 5K indoor or outdoors by a Mustang woman since Katie Izzo in 2019.
Sydnie Rivas also excelled in the 5,000, running a 16:32.05 and shaving well over 45 seconds off her lifetime best.
On the men's side, John Bennett ran an impressive sub-14-minute 5,000 time (13:58.92) to earn third in his heat and 23rd overall. The mark was a new Division I indoor school record and a lifetime PR.
Anthony Guerra knocked a few seconds off his lifetime PR with a 14:16.03, and Aidan Dimick (14:17.66) and Michael Chambers (15:03.30) also posted PRs in the event.
In the women's 3,000-meter, freshman Tatiana Cornejo etched her name in the Cal Poly record books running the fifth-fastest time in program history (9:40.15). Olla and Nina St. John weren't far behind and now sit at No. 8 (9:43.53) and No. 9 (9:45.47) all-time in the event thanks to their PRs.
Xian Shively led the way for the Cal Poly men in the 3,000 with an 8:02.97, dropping nearly five seconds off his PR to capture second in his heat and 28th overall. Spencer Thurman also secured a lifetime best (8:13.07) in the event.
Action from the final day of the Husky Classic begins at 10 a.m. Saturday.
