Mustangs End 2023 with Saturday Setback at UC Davis
12/30/2023 4:58:00 PM | Men's Basketball
DAVIS – Graduate guard Jarred Hyder (above) led the Cal Poly men's basketball program with 13 points Saturday, but the Mustangs – after cutting a second-half deficit at UC Davis to nine points with 10 minutes remaining – were kept to just six the remainder of the afternoon in dropping a 71-46 decision to the Aggies inside the University Credit Union Center.
Senior guard Kobe Sanders added 10 points to remain in double-digit scoring figures through all 14 games this season for Cal Poly (4-10, 0-2), which trailed UC Davis (7-6, 2-0) by six at halftime and 49-40 with 10 minutes to go. Cal Poly converted just one more field goal attempt the rest of the way, however.
Cal Poly opens the 2024 calendar year by hosting the Big West's two highest scoring programs in Long Beach State (Thursday, Jan. 4) and UC Santa Barbara (Saturday, Jan. 6). Tip time is 7 p.m. on ESPN+ both nights.
Held to just one field goal during the opening six-and-a-half minutes Saturday, Cal Poly found itself trailing 15-4 early after Aggies guard Elijah Pepper – the program's all-time leading scorer – sank his first three three-point attempts.
Cal Poly responded, however, with a 15-6 run backboned by four Hyder jumpers to trim the UC Davis advantage to 21-19 with six minutes remaining before halftime. Hyder cut the deficit to one with a three-pointer a minute later later with the Mustangs ultimately facing a 33-27 deficit at the break.
Mustang graduate forward Tuukka Jaakkola scored the opening basket of the second half and junior center Joel Armotrading's lone bucket of the afternoon shortened Cal Poly's deficit to the 49-40 scoreline. The Mustangs though received just a jumper from freshman guard Quentin Jones and four free throws down the stretch.
