SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — A trio of Cal Poly runners will travel across the country to compete in the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener hosted by Boston University on Saturday to kick-off the indoor track and field season for the Mustangs.
Redshirt junior Aidan McCarthy, sophomore Carson Smith and freshman Chris Caudillo (pictured above) are all set to race at Boston University's famed Track & Tennis Center, regarded as one of the fastest indoor track facilities in the world. The meet will be streamed live on FloTrack.
McCarthy and Smith are both entered in the men's mile, which is scheduled to start at 8:07 a.m. PST. Last indoor season at BU's Last Chance Invite on Feb. 24, 2023, McCarthy made history when he became the first Mustang to run a sub-four minute mile, recording a time of 3:59.42. Smith paced the mile for McCarthy and two other Mustangs before dropping out with about 600 meters left in the race.
McCarthy's performance in Boston capped off the 2022-23 indoor season for the Mustangs and propelled the Pleasanton, Calif. native to an incredible campaign outdoors. McCarthy placed seventh in the men's 800-meter at the NCAA Championships to become the program's first First Team All-American in 12 years. He also obliterated school records in the 800 and 1,500, captured his second straight Big West title in the 800 and became the first Mustang in school history to place first in an event at the NCAA West Preliminaries.
McCarthy recently wrapped up his cross country season on Nov. 10, placing 52nd overall at the NCAA West Regional in Sacramento. He secured a runner-up finish at the Big West XC Championships with a personal-best 8K time (23:41.8) to grab All-Big West honors in cross country for the second time and help the Mustang men capture their second consecutive conference title.
Last year, Smith finished 10th in the 1,500 at the Big West Championships. McCarthy and Smith are two of 62 entries in the mile at the meet.
Caudillo is one of 110 runners set to compete in the men's 3,000-meter at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener with heats set to begin at 12:05 p.m. PST. Caudillo is fresh off his first cross country season with the Mustangs. The Clovis, Calif. native earned Big West Men's Freshman of the Year honors by placing 13th at the conference championships, and also ran a personal-best 10K time (31:02.0) at the NCAA West Regional.
Following Saturday's meet, Cal Poly continues its indoor season on Saturday, Jan. 13, when a larger contingent of Mustangs head to Seattle to compete in the UW Indoor Preview. Cal Poly travels to Seattle three more times during the indoor season to take part in the UW Invitational on Jan. 26-27, the Husky Classic on Feb. 9-10 and the Ken Shannon Last Chance Invite on Feb 23-24. The Mustangs will also make return trips to Boston on Feb. 3 for the Bruce Lehane Scarlet & White Invite and Feb. 9-10 for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
The NCAA Indoor Championships will be held on March 8-9 at The TRACK at New Balance in Boston.
