Fredrick, Akima Earn Big West Weekly Honors

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After putting on stellar performances last week and helping the Cal Poly volleyball team go 2-0, freshman outside hitter Emma Fredrick and redshirt junior libero Jolei Akima both took home Big West weekly honors this week.
Fredrick was named Big West Freshman of the Week after making the most of her first two career starts. She averaged 3.50 kills per set while hitting .343 and recording double digit kills in both matches. In a 3-0 sweep over UC Riverside, she finished with 11 kills before following it up with a season-high 17 kills in a five-set win over UC Davis. For the weekend, she only committed five attack errors on 67 attempts.
Akima led Cal Poly's back row defense all weekend. She averaged 5.25 digs per set, recording at least 15 digs in both matches. In the sweep over UC Riverside, she finished with 15 digs. She followed that up with a career-high 27 digs in the five-set win over UC Davis. Akima ranks second in the Big West at 4.19 digs per set for the season.
This is Akima's second Big West Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season while it is the first weekly honor for Fredrick.
After finishing the regular season 20-10 overall and 14-4 in Big West play, the Mustangs earned the No. 3 seed in this week's Big West Championship held at the Walter Pyramid at Long Beach State. Cal Poly will face No. 6 seed UC Davis Wednesday at 7 p.m. with the match airing live on ESPN+.
