SAN LUIS OBISPO – With National Letter of Intent signees ranging from the Central Coast to southern Spain, the Mustang men's golf program – under fourth-year head coach Phil Rowe – added three players to the 2024-25 roster.
Set to join the Mustangs next fall are Luke Montoya (San Luis Obispo, Calif), Nolan Kuszyk (La Cañada Flintridge, Calif.) and Rafa Guerrero (Granada, Spain).
Luke Montoya
Last year's California Interscholastic Federation Central Section tournament runner-up, Montoya also helped Mission Prep HS to a second-place team showing. At youth level this past spring, Montoya finished second at the 72nd Los Angeles Junior Championship and secured top-20 showings at the Pasadena City Amatuer Championship and McClure Cup in Monterey.
As a 16-year-old, Montoya finished in the top third at the 119th Northern California Amateur at Spyglass while competing in qualifiers for both the 2022 U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur. Having won on the Junior Tour of Northern California Spring Series at Paso Robles, Montoya's other recent standout performances include a second-place finish at the 2022 St. Andrews Boys Open (St. Andrews, Scotland) and fifth at the U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifier (Stanford Golf Course).
"We can't wait to bring Central Coast native Luke into our program," Rowe said. "He brings dedication to everything he does on the golf course as well as in the classroom and his community philanthropy projects. He's no stranger to accomplishing amazing feats –he completed his pilot's license before he could drive."
Rafa Guerrero
Among recent standout performances, Guerrero finished tied for 31st during April's prestigious European Nations Cup at Real club De Golf Sotogrande in Cadiz. Guerrero then bested the field of 90 players at August's Campeonato de Andalucia sub 18 Masculino.
A member of the Spanish youth national team program since 2017, Guerrero has been ranked as high as No. 9 among youth players in Spain.
"Rafa carries with him a confidence that we know will be contagious to our team," Rowe said. "He's really turned it on of late with a scoring average of 72.67 over his last 15 tournament rounds. His ambition is to compete at the highest levels in the game and he's already contended admirably in several top tier men's amateur contests in Europe."
Nolan Kuszyk
Kuszyk already owns two titles this calendar year at the AJGA Copper Valley Open (July 17-20) and SDJGA Junior World Qualifier (June 28-29) and seven top-10 finishes. During the previous two years, he captured the title at the SCPGA Toyota Cup Olivas Links and finished runner-up at the AJGA Copper Valley Open.
A member of the San Diego Junior Golf Travel Team where he helped the side to a first-place finish at the Eddie Hogan Cup, Kuszyk also led the La Cañada HS program to its first California Interscholastic Division III championship in 2022.
"We're very excited to bring Nolan onboard our program," Rowe said. "He's a proven winner, capturing the AJGA Copper Valley Open at 14 under and consistently placing himself near the top of the leaderboard. A true student of the game, he also has a passion for course architecture and loved the possibilities for practice at our Tom Lehman Training Facility."
