LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Needing to pull back some late strokes to secure at least a share of the title at Northwestern’s Windom Memorial, freshman Frederick Egnatios – playing just his second collegiate tournament – birdied four of his final five holes Tuesday afternoon and split the individual championship with Zhenxian Zhang of UC Davis.
Collectively, Cal Poly’s three-round total of 847 was one shot shy of establishing a new program tournament scoring record. The Mustangs finished seventh alongside Minnesota with their seven-over 847 at the par-70, 6,716-yard Onwentsia Club.
Egnatios, who entered Tuesday’s final 18 holes as the co-leader, fell behind Zhang midway through the round with a bogey. Zhang, meanwhile, closed with a five-under 65 and completed play with Egnatios still on the course.
Egnatios, however, birdied the 18th, first, second and third holes (shotgun start) to finish with a three-under 67 and three-round, eight-under 202 – the third lowest tournament score in program history.
Egnatios, whose opening-round 65 on Monday marked the third lowest 18-hole total in program history, secured Cal Poly’s sixth individual title in the past five seasons.
Cal Poly sophomore Vidur Subramaniam finished 30th with a two-over 212 (68-73-71). Subramaniam posted a one-over 71 Tuesday to close, recording an eagle for the third successive round.
Senior Jack Jarvis, meanwhile, was 43rd with a five-over 215 (72-69-74), capping tournament play with three birdies Tuesday. Freshman Leo McDonough was 64th with a 220 (74-73-73) and sophomore Rafael Bobo-Lloret was a shot behind (74-71-76).
Cal Poly resumes action at the Saint Mary’s Invitational, scheduled for Oct. 19-21 at the Bayonet & Black Horse GC in Seaside, Calif.
