SEASIDE – Frederick Egnatios recorded eight birdies during Monday’s opening round at the Saint Mary’s Invitational as the Cal Poly men’s golf freshman finished with a six-under 66 for a four-way share of first place atop the leaderboard.
At the par-72, 7,044-yard Bayonet & Blackhorse Golf Club, Egnatios – the nation’s 76th-ranked player – birdied five of the first eight holes while balancing two bogeys for his 66. Returning to action after capturing the title at Northwestern’s Sept. 28-29 Windon Memorial, Egnatios shares first place with Sam Baumuller (Saint Mary’s), Hamish Farquharson (Washington) and Callixte Alzas (California).
Mustang sophomore Vidur Subramaniam carded three birdies Monday as part of a one-under 71 and sits in 24th position. Sophomore Rafael Bobo-Lloret (46th place, one-over), freshman Leo McDonough (62nd, two-over) and senior Jack Jarvis (80th, three-over) each produced four birdies, but had their opening rounds offset by multiple bogeys.
As a program, Cal Poly sits eighth in the 18-program field with a collective four-over 288. The Mustangs are six shots behind leaders No. 33 Washington, No. 47 California and Oregon.
Second-round action at the Saint Mary’s Invitational gets underway at 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday.
