Cal Poly Hosting Simpson University Thursday Morning for Exhibition Game

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women's basketball fans will get their first look at the 2023-24 team Thursday when the Mustangs host Simpson University for an exhibition game at 11 a.m. inside Mott Athletics Center. It will be the annual 'Field Trip' game for Cal Poly with over 1,000 local elementary school children in attendance. Attendance for everyone is free to get in. The game will not be streamed but live stats will be available for fans to follow HERE. The Mustangs will have a new look this season under second year head coach Shanele Stires as the team has added nine newcomers while returning four players from last year. The newcomers are comprised of five true freshmen and four Division I transfers. Cal Poly added graduate transfer guard Ania McNichols from Cornell, who was top-20 in the nation last year in steals, graduate transfer forward Amanda Olinger from University of San Diego where she played in 73 career games, as well as junior transfers Diamond Richardson from Pacific and Sidney Richards from San Jose State. The four returners include junior Annika Shah, last year's leader in scoring and assists, junior Sydney Bourland, the team's leader in minutes last year and second-leading rebounder, senior Natalia Ackerman, last year's team leader in rebounds and blocks, and redshirt freshman Sierra Lichtie, who played in the first eight games of the season last year before suffering a season-ending injury. The Mustangs faced Simpson last year, beating the RedHawks 81-49. Cal Poly will open the regular season Monday, Nov. 6 on the road at Washington State, last year's PAC-12 champion, at 4 p.m. That will begin a stretch of seven straight games on the road to start the season.
