Mustangs Put on Impressive Showing in 70-18 Exhibition Win Over Simpson
11/2/2023 2:53:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In front of nearly 2,000 fans inside Mott Athletics Center, Cal Poly women's basketball put on an impressive show in its first exhibition game of the 2023-24 season Thursday, beating Simpson University 70-18.Annika Shah and Sidney Richards both had as much or more points than the entire Simpson team. Shah led the way with a game-high 19 points, knocking down five threes. Richards, a transfer from San Jose State, was right behind her with an incredibly efficient 18 points, going 8-11 from the field in addition to four assists and four steals. Graduate forward Amanda Olinger, a transfer from University of San Diego, also finished in double figures with 12 points.
As a team, the Mustangs shot 49 percent from the field and 47 percent from three as they smothered the RedHawks defensively, holding them to single digit points in all four quarters.
"Pushing pace worked a lot for us," Shah said of the team's performance. "Our bigs were running the floor well and our attack game was working well. We created lots of advantages for each other that opened up the middle of the floor for attacks, kick-outs, and wide open shots."
Cal Poly's defense forced Simpson into 31 turnovers as the Mustangs racked up 15 steals and 30 points off those turnovers. Cal Poly's swarming defense only allowed Simpson to shoot 12 percent from the field.
Cal Poly led from the opening minute, taking a 15-3 advantage after the first quarter and a 31-7 lead at halftime before continuing that play in the second half.
"There were a lot of positives from the game, but we are mostly trying to find areas of improvement," Shah added. "I loved how we constantly played hard and threw the first punch to start the game. There's things to clean up in the next couple days before we hit the road for some top opponents."
The Mustangs will officially begin the regular season on Monday, Nov. 6 at 4 p.m. at last year's PAC-12 champion Washington State, ranked No. 24 in the AP Preseason Top 25 Poll. That will start a stretch of seven straight road games to start the season which include games against No. 15 Stanford and No. 21 USC. Cal Poly's first regular season home game is Dec. 9 against Fresno State.
