Mustangs Fall to No. 24 Washington State in Season Opener, 78-61

PULLMAN, Wash. — It was a solid first impression for the Cal Poly women's basketball team in its 2023-24 season opener as the Mustangs led No. 24 Washington State 34-31 at halftime before ultimately falling to the nationally ranked Cougars 78-61 Monday on the road.Natalia Ackerman's 12 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Annika Shah added nine points and a team-high four assists. Freshman Mary Carter impressed in her first collegiate game, knocking down three triples for nine points and added seven rebounds.
Two other Mustangs, Sydney Bourland and Ania McNicholas both added eight points apiece for Cal Poly, who shot 57 percent from three on the night while also committing fewer turnovers than the No. 24 Cougars.
The Mustangs started the game hot, making six of their first seven shots and took its first lead at 13-11 with 5:30 left in the first quarter. Cal Poly took its biggest lead of the game at 23-16 following back-to-back threes from Carter and led 23-17 heading into the second quarter.
Cal Poly turned up its defense in the second quarter, limiting the Cougars to 25 percent shooting as they held Washington State to 14 points and took a 34-31 lead into halftime.
Washington State opened the second half with five unanswered points to take a 36-34 lead. Cal Poly held a 41-40 lead with 6:16 left in the third. However, that was the Mustangs' last lead of the game as the Cougars went on a 14-2 run over the final six minutes of the quarter to take a 54-43 heading into the fourth.
The Mustangs got back within seven to begin the fourth after scoring the first four points of the quarter before Washington State pulled away for good.
Cal Poly heads just down the road from Pullman to face the University of Idaho on Wednesday at 5 p.m. PT. That game will air live on ESPN+.
