11/8/2023 10:29:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MOSCOW, Idaho — Three players finished in double figures as the Cal Poly women's basketball team went into Moscow and picked up a 65-55 road win over the University of Idaho Wednesday.Annika Shah's 19 points. Shah, who was 6-12 from the field, also tied a career-high with six rebounds. Senior forward Natalia Ackerman had one of the best games of her collegiate career, scoring 14 points and collecting a career-high 15 rebounds in addition to three blocks while also hitting her first career three pointer.
Junior guard Sidney Richards added 12 points for Cal Poly, who out-rebounded the Vandals (1-1) 48-29 for the game. The Mustangs were also very efficient from the free throw line, going 19-21.
"We have a nice little mix of inside presence and shot creation and I think that gives our offense nice balance," Mustang head coach Shanele Stires said.
Shah scored seven of Cal Poly's first nine points as the Mustangs got out to a 9-5 lead to begin the game. The Mustangs led 17-14 after the first quarter before Idaho came back to eventually tie it at 22 midway through the second quarter.
Shah continued her strong first half, scoring 13 points as she helped the Mustangs take a 33-29 lead into halftime.
Up 40-35 with four minutes left in the third quarter, the Mustangs turned it up to another level, going on an 8-0 run to take their largest lead of the game of 13 at 48-35. The Vandals got back within seven with 2:30 left in the game after going on a 7-1 run but Cal Poly never let them get closer than that.
"I think the key to the game was our intensity," Stires added. "We were able to play with a level of physicality even though we were in a little bit of foul trouble."
The Mustangs next head to San Jose State to take on the Spartans Saturday at 12 p.m. with the game airing live on the Mountain West Network.
The Mustangs (1-1) were led in scoring by junior guard
