Mustangs Fall in Close Battle at San Jose State Saturday

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Freshman Mary Carter and senior Natalia Ackerman both scored in double figures but Cal Poly women's basketball, plagued by 30 turnovers, fell in a tight one on the road to San Jose State Saturday, 61-56.
Carter notched her first career double-double, scoring a season-high 11 points in addition to 10 rebounds, three assists and three blocks to lead the Mustangs (1-2). Ackerman recorded 10 points, four rebounds, and a pair of blocks. She has now scored double digits in all three games to start the season.
Cal Poly got out to a 7-2 lead four minutes into the game but were outscored 9-4 the remainder of the quarter and were tied with the Spartans (2-1) at 11 apiece after the first quarter. The second quarter was tight throughout as Cal Poly's defense held San Jose State without a field goal the final four minutes of the half and trailed by just two at halftime.
The Spartans opened the second half scoring the first 10 points to take a 33-21 lead. The Mustangs got back within seven after scoring five straight points before San Jose State pushed their lead back up to 14 after a 7-0 run.
Trailing 48-36 heading into the fourth quarter, Cal Poly trimmed the lead down to two at 53-51 after a 15-5 run over the first seven minutes of the fourth. San Jose State scored back-to-back baskets pushed their lead back up to six with two minutes left.
Carter hit a three to get Cal Poly back within three at 57-54 but the Mustangs were unable to gain any more ground from there.
The Mustangs will stay in the Bay Area to face Cal on Monday at 3 p.m. The game will air live on Pac12Network.com.
