SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore quarterback Sam Huard completed 31 of 39 passes – the highest total by a Cal Poly player in 23 years – including the go-ahead touchdown completion to senior wide receiver Bryson Allen early in Saturday evening's fourth quarter as the Mustangs earned their first Big Sky Conference victory of the season with a 24-17 win against Northern Colorado at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital.
Allen finished with a career high 90 receiving yards while senior running back Mark Biggins (above) ran for a collegiate best 78 yards for Cal Poly (3-5, 1-4), which collectively set team season highs for total yards (508) and rushing yards (175).
Huard, who also finished with 333 passing yards, completed the most passes by a Mustang quarterback since Seth Burford established a Cal Poly Division I record with 34 against Northern Iowa on Nov. 4, 2000 (Alli Abrew also completed 31 passes at Idaho on Oct. 5, 1996).
With Saturday's matchup tied 17-17 following a third-quarter Northern Colorado touchdown, Huard found Allen from four yards out 67 seconds into the fourth quarter and freshman kicker Noah Serna supplied the extra point to hand Cal Poly the 24-17 advantage.
Cal Poly utilizes a bye week for the Saturday, Oct. 28 competition date before resuming play at Eastern Washington on Saturday, Nov. 4. Kickoff from Roos Field is 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
Northern Colorado opened Saturday's scoring, transforming the game's initial drive into a two-yard touchdown reception by wide receiver Zain Zinicola from quarterback Jacob Sirmon. Cal Poly, however, equalized two minutes before the end of the quarter through a one-yard touchdown plunge from Biggins.
The Bears broke the deadlock with Hunter Green kicking a 27-yard field goal to open the second quarter before the Mustangs surged ahead 11 minutes before halftime as Huard picked out sophomore wide receiver Logan Booher from eight yards for a 14-10 advantage.
The Mustangs then added a 36-yard Serna field goal with four minutes remaining to stretch the lead to 17-10 heading halftime.
Northern Colorado hit back midway through the third quarter with a 16-yard Sirmon touchdown pass finding wide receiver Jamarii Robinson to square the matchup at 17-17.
