STANFORD, Calif. — An impressive run to the doubles quarterfinals by the Dunkle sisters highlighted action for the Cal Poly women's tennis team during the ITA Northwest Regionals hosted by Stanford this weekend.
Fifth-year Delanie Dunkle and junior Peyton Dunkle got their tourney run started Friday with a dominant 8-3 Round of 64 doubles victory over Pacific's Megan Carmichael and Elizaveta Mladentseva.
The Dunkle sisters tore up the court once again on Saturday, rolling to a 8-2 win in the Round of 32 over Cal's Lan Mi and Cami Brown. The victory set up a showdown with Washington State's Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse, the fourth-ranked doubles pairing at regionals, in the Round of 16 of Sunday morning. The Dunkles took care of business 8-4 to upset Alvarez Sande and Tse, ranked No. 25 in the ITA national preseason doubles rankings.
In the quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon, the Dunkles saw their run at regionals come to a close, falling 8-5 to Washington's Astrid Olsen and Alexia Jacobs, who were seeded eighth in the tourney. The Dunkles finished with a 3-1 doubles record at the event.
Last season, the Dunkle sisters teamed up in doubles for the first time in their collegiate careers, earning All-Big West Second Team honors and posting a team-best 15-8 overall mark while playing at the No. 1 spot, tied for the fifth-most dual victories by a doubles pairing in Division I program history. The pairing also went undefeated (3-0) at the 2023 Big West Championships and grabbed the third postseason doubles win in Division I program history in an NIT Championship consolation match against No. 70 Wyoming.
Delanie Dunkle also had a strong showing in singles at the tourney, advancing to the Round of 32 thanks to a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 opening round victory over San Jose State's Olaya Bances Iglesias and a 6-2, 6-3 Round of 64 win over Gonzaga's Caroline Wernli.
Graduate student Melissa LaMette and junior Romane Mosse made it to the Round of 32 in doubles, defeating Oregon's Jo-Yee Chan and Nina Geissler 8-7 (7-3) in their opening match.
Cal Poly continues its fall season on Oct. 27-29 when they compete in the Saint Mary's College Invite.
