Mustangs Shatter Home Attendance Record, Crush CSUN 4-0
10/15/2023 8:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Redshirt sophomore Dani Wozniak, and freshmen Bailey Bracha and Jaycee DeFazio all scored their first career goals and sophomore Jessie Halladay buried her fourth goal of the season as Cal Poly women's soccer dominated CSUN on Sunday, rolling to a 4-0 victory at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital.
The Mustangs, who secured their third straight win, tightened their grip on the top spot in the Big West table. With the victory, Cal Poly improved to 5-1-1 in conference play. They sit 1 point in front of second-place Cal State Fullerton (6-4-7, 4-1-3) with just three matches left to play this season. However, the Titans only have two matches left to play.
The Big West leading Mustangs (7-5-3 overall) also shattered their home attendance record during their doubleheader with men's soccer. 4,064 fans were reported to be in attendance, breaking the previous record of 3,016 set on Nov. 3, 2000, against UC Santa Barbara. It's also the 20th-most attended women's soccer match in Division I this season.
Cal Poly, now unbeaten in five straight matches, saw its first goal of the match come by way of a rocket from Bracha in the 31st minute. The freshman forward from Clovis, Calif., blasted a shot off from just inside the box off the left post and into the back of the net. Freshman Sophia Moness earned her third assist of the season on Bracha's first career tally.
Less than five minutes later, Cal Poly struck again on some perfectly executed passing. Senior Kate Reedy played a ball to redshirt freshman Sophia Minnite who sent a cross from the right in front of the net that Halladay pounded into the back of the CSUN net. For Halladay, it was her 12th point of the season, which leads the team and is the sixth most in the Big West. The assist by Minnite was her first collegiate point.
The Mustangs carried the 2-0 advantage into halftime, outshooting the Matadors 12-3 in the opening 45 minutes.
In the 55th minute, Cal Poly lit up the scoreboard once again. DeFazio sent a cross into the box from the right wing and Wozniak crushed a volley into the net for her first career point and goal. Reedy secured a secondary assist on the tally, her second of the match, third of the season and 11th point on the year.
Just four minutes after recording her first collegiate assist, DeFazio blasted home her first career goal on a perfect shot to the top left post. Sophomore Brennan Cole was credited with an assist on the goal, her third of the season.
The Mustangs shut down CSUN for the rest of the match to preserve their fourth shutout of the season and second straight. Cal Poly registered 20 shots in the match, putting a remarkable 15 on frame.
Junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel started her 24th straight match in net, recording two saves. Samuel was subbed off in the 63rd minute for redshirt freshman goalkeeper Riley Wilkerson, who made her first career appearance. The San Luis Obispo native faced two shots and did not record a save.
So far this season, 20 Mustangs have recorded a point and 14 have scored a goal.
Cal Poly heads to UC Davis at 4 p.m. Thursday before traveling to Hawai'i next Sunday for its final regular season road match.
