Mustangs Fall at Davis, Remain Atop Big West Table
10/19/2023 7:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
DAVIS, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer team fell 1-0 to UC Davis on Thursday at the Aggie Soccer Field.
Despite the defeat, the Mustangs (7-6-3, 5-2-1 Big West) remain in first place in the Big West standings, 1 point ahead of second-place Cal State Fullerton (6-4-7, 4-1-3 BW) and 2 points in front of third-place UC Davis (8-6-2, 4-2-2 BW). Cal Poly still controls its own destiny when it comes to securing its second straight outright conference regular season title. If the Mustangs win their two final matches of the season, they will earn the No. 1 seed in the Big West tournament and the right to host the semifinals and championship match.
The Aggies' Risa Yamada scored the match's lone goal just 27 seconds into the match.
The early score didn't deter the Mustangs though as they generated the more dangerous scoring opportunities throughout the match.
In the 10th minute, sophomore Jessie Halladay, making her third start of the season and first since Aug. 27 at Loyola Marymount, blasted a shot from about 25 yards out toward the top of the goal that the UC Davis keeper barely got a hand to keep out of the net.
Less than 20 minutes later, Halladay got another clean look at net thanks to a nice pass from senior Kate Reedy, but UC Davis goalkeeper Caeley Goldstein was there to make the save.
The Mustangs upped their offensive pressure in the opening moments of the second half, firing three shots in the first 10 minutes and generating one opportunity after another. In the 59th minute, Jaycee DeFazio, who recorded her first career goal and assist in Sunday's 4-0 win over CSUN to earn Big West Freshman of the Week honors, nearly found the back of the net on a cross played in front by sophomore Emily Lieber.
In the 64th minute, Lieber sent a shot from well outside the box off the top of the crossbar.
In the 75th minute, senior Olivia Ortiz saw her shot destined for the left post get turned away by the Aggie keeper. Then moments later, Halladay fired her fourth and final shot on goal of the match.
In the final moments of the match, junior center back Emma Brown, who made her 39th consecutive start Thursday, pushed forward from her spot on the backline and nearly leveled the match at 1-1, blasting a dangerous shot from outside the box on frame in the 89th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel made four saves for the Mustangs. Cal Poly outshot UC Davis 16-9 in the match.
