Each side forced the other to punt on Saturday's initial drives with Montana State opening the scoring after junior Ty McCullouch returned a 49-yard punt from Mustang sophomore Ryan Collins 65 yards for a 7-0 lead.
Cal Poly punted once more on its second drive, but the kick from Collins clipped off Montana State's Devin Davis before being recovered by Mustang sophomore Michael Briscoe at the Bobcat 36-yard line. Five plays and 92 seconds later, Huard found Woods from 16 yards out to cut Montana State's lead to 7-6 (extra point blocked).
The Bobcats, however, scored on their next two drives with Sean Chambers first rushing from eight yards away before scoring on a 64-yard run to further Montana State's lead to 21-6 with five minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
Montana State quarterback Tommy Mellott then opened the second quarter by finding tight end Derryk Snell from 12 yards for a 28-6 advantage.
Huard, with 133 first-half passing yards, helped get Cal Poly back on the scoreboard two-and-a-half minutes before halftime, arcing a 41-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Evan Burkhart.
Montana State scored once more to close the first half, but the Mustangs struck back midway through the third with Huard picking out Fairly-Diyem from 21 yards to complete Cal Poly's scoring.
