Mustangs Finish Non-Conference Play with Sweep of Tarleton State

GREELEY, Colo. — The Cal Poly volleyball team ended the non-conference portion of its schedule strong Saturday, sweeping Tarleton State 3-0 (25-18, 27-25, 25-15) and finishing the Northern Colorado Classic undefeated.Tommi Stockham who had 12 kills while hitting .400 to go along with five digs and four blocks. Fellow redshirt sophomore outside hitter Amy Hiatt added 10 kills with just three attack errors on 27 swings. Senior right side hitter Maia Dvoracek matched her career-high with 17 digs to lead the Mustangs in that category while also finishing with eight kills and four blocks.
Cal Poly got out to a strong start to begin the first set, scoring the first six points. Tarleton State, who never led the entire set, never got closer than within three. The Mustangs, who sided-out at a 73-percent rate in the first set, led by as many as seven at 23-16 before going on to win it 25-18.
Tied 6-6 in the second set, a 5-1 Cal Poly run gave the Mustangs a four-point lead. The Texans then went on a 6-2 run to tie it again 13-13. Later with Cal Poly leading 19-18, Tarleton State went on a 4-1 run to go up 22-20. Facing a 24-22 deficit, the Mustangs held off the Texans with three straight points to regain a 25-24 lead. After Tarleton State tied it at 25 apiece, a Stockham kill followed by a Stockham block completed the 27-25 comeback win for Cal Poly.
With Tarleton State leading 9-7 in the third set, the Mustangs went on a 7-1 run to take the lead back at 14-10. The Texans cut it to 15-12 before Cal Poly pulled away with an 8-2 run to make it 23-14. Up 23-15, a kill by redshirt sophomore middle blocker Kate Slack followed by a Tarleton State attack error completed the 25-15 victory for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly now gets ready to head into Big West play next week with some good momentum. The Mustangs' journey to a sixth Big West title starts Friday, September 23 when hosting Long Beach State at Mott Athletics Center for the home opener at 7 p.m.
The Mustangs (3-7), who have now won their last three matches, hit a season-best .340 for the match, committing just nine attack errors, while holding the Texans (8-6) to a .092 hitting percentage, the lowest they've held an opponent to all season. They also out-blocked Tarleton State 10.5 to 4.5.
