Mustangs Take Down Long Beach State in Home Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Playing its first home match of the season, the Cal Poly volleyball team started Big West play strong with a 3-1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-23, 25-20) win over Long Beach State Friday at Mott Athletics Center.Tommi Stockham finished with a match-high 19 kills to lead the Mustangs (4-7, 1-0 BW) offensively. Senior right side Maia Dvoracek, playing her first home match since 2019, recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 16 kills and 14 digs to go along with two aces. Redshirt freshman setter Emme Bullis also had a double-double, her seventh of the year, dishing out 38 assists to go along with 13 digs as well as a pair of aces.
Defensively, senior middle blocker Meredith Phillips led the Mustangs' blocking at the net, finishing with a team-high six. In the back row, redshirt sophomore Jolei Akima added 12 digs.
Cal Poly held the Beach (5-4, 0-1 BW) to a .184 hitting percentage while also having more digs and blocks than Long Beach State.
Down 9-7 in the first set, the Mustangs scored five straight points, three of them via a Stockham kill to take a 12-9 lead. Long Beach State eventually got it back to within one at 16-15 before a 5-1 Cal Poly run stretched the lead back up to five. Long Beach State never got closer than four points from there as the Mustangs won the set 25-20.
Long Beach State got out to a 6-3 lead to begin the second set. After the Mustangs scored three straight points to tie it at six apiece, Long Beach State scored five in a row. Up 15-11, Long Beach State went on a 5-1 run to pull away 20-12 before going on to win the set 25-16.
Cal Poly flipped the script on the Beach to start the third set as the Mustangs played their way to a 6-3 lead to start. Tied 8-8, a 5-1 Cal Poly run gave the Mustangs a four-point lead before a 7-1 Long Beach State run regained the lead for the Beach at 16-14. Cal Poly then tied it with a 3-1 run, 17-17. Tied 22-22, the Mustangs scored back-to-back points to hold match point. Long Beach State scored on the next point before a Dvoracek kill put away the set for Cal Poly, 25-23.
Cal Poly scored the first five points of the fourth set, a lead they never relinquished the rest of the set. Long Beach State got it back to within one at 7-6 before a 5-1 run gave the Mustangs a 12-7 lead. With Cal Poly leading 19-15, Long Beach State scored three straight points to cut the lead down to one before the Mustangs finished the set on a 6-2 run to win it 25-20 and seal the match.
Cal Poly will be back in Mott Saturday at 7 p.m. to face Cal State Fullerton.
