9/17/2022 2:33:00 PM | Football
VERMILLION, S.D. -- Cal Poly produced six drives of 55 or more yards, but scored just three times as South Dakota won its home opener, 38-21, in a non-conference football game Saturday afternoon inside the DakotaDome.
South Dakota led all the way, scoring the first 14 points of the game and outscoring the visiting Mustangs 21-7 in the opening period.
Cal Poly fell to 1-2 despite putting together drives of 55, 75, 72, 61, 66 and 80 yards. The Mustangs had more first downs, 26-20, and finished one yard shy of the Coyotes, 560-559, in total offense.
Logan Booher caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Spencer Brasch with 6:16 left in the first quarter, capping a 75-yard drive.
Brasch also hit Zedakiah Centers with a 53-yard scoring pass, ending an 80-yard march, and Chris Coleman with a 26-yard touchdown strike to end a 75-yard drive.
The other three long Mustang drives, however, ended on downs, a lost fumble and a missed field goal attempt.
Running back Shakobe Harper earned his first 100-yard game as a Mustang, rushing for 106 yards on 11 carries with a long of 40 yards on a wildcat snap from center. Harper is Cal Poly's first 100-yard rusher since quarterback Kyle Reid Kyle ran for 143 yards in the 2019 season finale at Northern Colorado.
Brasch completed 24 of 42 passes for 362 yards and three touchdowns. Coleman was his favorite target with seven catches for 107 yards. Centers, Josh Cuevas and Harper each had four catches.
Brasch replaced starting quarterback Jaden Jones midway through the first quarter after Jones suffered a right leg injury.
Travis Theis scored one touchdown for South Dakota and netted 90 yards on 24 carries. Quarterback Carson Camp added one touchdown on a 75-yard run and completed 18 of 21 passes for 355 yards and three scores. JJ Galbreath caught six passes for 87 yards.
Cal Poly's defensive leaders were David Meyer with eight tackles, including one sack, and Dustin Grein and Josh Ngaluafe, each with six tackles. Grein had two sacks and Elijah Ponder also notched a sack for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly has been outscored 49-7 in the first quarter this season.
Cal Poly has a bye next week and opens Big Sky Conference play Oct. 1 against Sacramento State. The Homecoming Game kicks off at 5:02 p.m. inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
