
Former Cal Poly golfer Justin De Los Santos, who made the cut at the 150th British Open, carded a 70 in the third round Saturday to move into a tie for 55th place entering Sunday's final round at St. Andrews.

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland -- Former Cal Poly golfer and 2015 Big West Conference individual champion Justin De Los Santos, who made the cut Friday, climbed 11 spots on the leaderboard in Saturday's third round of the 150th British Open with a two-under-par 70.
De Los Santos carded a first-round 71 Thursday and a second-round 73 Friday on the Old Course at St. Andrews for an even-par 144 total, tied for 66th place with 17 other golfers. The cut was at 144. His 70 in the third round gave the 26-year-old a two-under-par 214 total
On Thursday, De Los Santos bogeyed the second hole, but quickly regained the stroke with a birdie on No. 4. He then rebounded from another miscue on No. 11 with a pitch-in eagle-2 on the next hole before holing out with another birdie following a bogey on the 17th.
In Friday's second round, De Los Santos carded two birdies and three bogeys. He birdied the seventh and 14th holes while carding bogeys at holes 2, 5 and 13.
De Los Santos birdied the first hole Saturday, then overcame a double-bogey on the second hole with three more birdies on the seventh, 12th and 14th holes to join eight other golfers in a tie for 55th place.
Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland share the lead at 16 under par after both shot 66s Saturday. They are four strokes ahead of first-round leader Cameron Young and second-round leader Cameron Smith.
De Los Santos, who competes on the Japan Tour, earned a slot in the season's final major championship with a fourth-place finish in the Mizuno Open at Okayama, Japan, in late May.
Playing in his first major, De Los Santos is believed to be the second former Cal Poly golfer to compete in the British Open and the lone Filipino golfer in the field this week. Loren Roberts played in 10 Opens with six top-30 finishes, including seventh place in the 2000 event at St. Andrews. Roberts also has won two Senior British Open titles.
Current Mustang head coach Phil Rowe competed in the 2000 British Open as well, missing the cut.
De Los Santos, who currently lives in the Philippines, turned pro on August 1, 2017, and has compiled $140,628.72 so far in career earnings. His fourth-place finish at the Mizuno Open is his highest career finish so far on the JGTO and De Los Santos also finished in a tie for sixth place in the ISPS Handa Championship in late April with a 19-under-par 265 total, carding rounds of 65, 66, 64 and 70. He led by one stroke entering the final round.
De Los Santos' best round on the JGTO is a 63 in the third round of the 2021 Panasonic Open Golf Championship en route to a sixth-place tie.
On the Abema Tour, De Los Santos won the 2019 Japan Create Challenge in Fukuoka, Japan, with rounds of 68, 71 and 66 for an 11-under-par 205 total. He defeated Toru Nakajima in a playoff.
As a sophomore at Cal Poly, De Los Santos won the 2015 Big West title at the San Luis Obispo Country Club with rounds of 70, 73 and 69 for a 212-total. The Chaminade High School graduate and Chatsworth native finished his Mustang career with a 72.84 scoring average, 12 top-10 finishes and 51 rounds of par or better, including 15 in the 60s.
His best round as a Mustang was a 65 in the Del Walker Intercollegiate.
