Cal Poly Betters Score by 16 Strokes, But Remains in 10th Place

SECOND-ROUND RESULTS
STANFORD, Calif. -- The Cal Poly women's golf team improved its score by 16 strokes, but remains in 10th place after two rounds of play in the NCAA Stanford Regional at the Stanford Golf Course.
Coach Sofie Aagaard's Mustangs are just 11 strokes out of sixth place entering the final round of play Wednesday morning on the 6,267-yard, par-71 course.
Cal Poly followed Monday's four-person 304 total with a 288 Tuesday, which was bettered by only the top three schools in the team standings.
Jensen Jalufka led the way for the Mustangs with a 70 while Vanessa Wang added a 71 as four of the five Cal Poly golfers bettered their first-round scores by at least three strokes.
Jalufka eagled the 359-yard, par-4 11th hole and also carded three birdies and four bogeys. Jalufka is one of four players who have recorded eagles in the first two rounds of play. Wang's even-par round included five birdies and five bogeys.
Jalufka and Kaylyn Noh (73-74) are tied for 28th place with four other golfers at 147 while Wang and Caroline Cantlay (76-73) share 36th place with two other golfers at 149.
Cantlay was one under par through her first nine holes Tuesday before posting four bogeys and one birdie the rest of the way. Noh, in 22nd place after the first round, had an even-par second round going through 13 holes before suffering a triple-bogey seven on the fifth hole, which she parred on Monday.
Elizabeth Scholtes added a 75 to her 80 for a 155 total and 54th place.
Amari Avery of USC leads the individual leaderboard with a six-under-par 136 total after rounds of 69 and 67. Avery is two strokes ahead of Carla Tejedo (70-68) of LSU and Brianna Navarrosa (70-68) of USC.
First-round leader Latanna Stone of LSU followed her 67 with a 75 and fell into a tie for 10th place at even-par 142.
USC leads Stanford by four strokes, 556-560, entering the final round of play. LSU, which led USC by one shot after the first round, slipped to third place at 563.
Jalufka is eighth in par-4 scoring at one over par.
The NCAA Division I National Championships will be held May 20-25 on the Raptor Course at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. The top four teams and two individuals from non-qualifying teams from each of the six regionals advance to the nationals.
