STANFORD, Calif. -- Cal Poly posted its best round of the three-day 54-hole NCAA Stanford Regional women's golf tournament on Wednesday at the Stanford Golf Course and finished 10th in its third regional appearance over the last six years.
Mustang freshman Kaylyn Noh, the Big West Conference individual champion, earned a top-20 finish with a final-round 70 while Jensen Jalufka missed a top-25 finish by just one stroke.
Coach Sofie Aagaard's Mustangs, who posted a 304 Monday and 288 Tuesday, wrapped up play with a four-person 287 Wednesday for a 27-over-par 879 aggregate on the 6,267-yard par-71 course.
Cal Poly finished just six strokes out of sixth place among the 12 teams competing for a top-four finish and a trip to the NCAA Division I National Championships, slated for May 20-25 on the Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
USC led the way with a 15-under-par 837 total while LSU and Stanford shared second place at 845. Northwestern and Purdue finished tied for fourth at 864, with Purdue winning a playoff to determine the final qualifying spot.
Top two individuals not on an advancing team also qualified for the nationals and a playoff was needed as well. The two qualifiers are Ruby Chou of Iowa State and Taglao Jeeravivitaporn of Iowa State, who defeated Jieni Li of Northwestern for the last individual qualifying spot.
Noh was three-under-par through the first 11 holes of her final round before carding bogeys on two of the next three holes. She parred out the rest of the way for her 70 and a tie for 19th place with five other golfers, climbing nine spots on the leaderboard for the day.
Jalufka posted a 72 with three birdies, a pair of bogeys and one double-bogey, finishing in a tie for 28th place, while Caroline Cantlay matched par with a 71 that included four birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey for a 30th-place tie.
Cal Poly's other scores were a final-round 74 by Vanessa Wang for a 223 total and 39th place, and Elizabeth Scholtes with a 77 for a 232 aggregate and 57th place.
Individual champion was Amari Avery of USC with a final-round 68 for a nine-under-par 204 total and a one-shot margin of victory over Stanford's Rose Zhang (66). Brianna Navarrosa of USC was third at 206.
Jalufka finished tied for 14th place in par-4 scoring at three over par and was one of eight golfers carding eagles in the event. Noh was tied for 13th in par-5 scoring at three under par and her 38 pars over 54 holes were tied for seventh.
Noh concludes her first year with the Mustangs No. 1 on the list of single-season scoring averages at 73.2 while Cantlay holds the school record for career scoring average at 74.84 over 102 rounds.
