Hallett Adds to School Record; More Than 20 New Personal Bests

CLOVIS, Calif. -- More than 20 new personal bests were recorded by Cal Poly track and field athletes at the West Coast Relays on Friday at Buchanan High School, with Emily Hallett adding another two feet, eight inches to her personal best and school record in the women's hammer throw.
Hallett placed third in the event with a throw of 198 feet, six inches, bettering her mark of 195-10 set at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational on March 11.
On the men's side, Mathis Bresko won the pole vault as he scaled 16 feet, 7.25 inches. Bresko led a 1-3-4 Mustang finish as Christian Valles placed third (personal-best 16-1.25) and Zack Volpe was fourth (16-1.25).
In women's events, Melissa Navarro, a midseason transfer from Butte College competing in her first meet as a Mustang, finished second in the javelin with a personal-best mark of 155-8.
Melody Nwagwu placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 39-10.75 and fourth in the long jump at 18-10.75, both career bests.
Other fourth-place finishes were earned by Maia Garcia in the high jump (personal-best 5-3.25), Julia Heckey in the 1,500 (personal-best 4:30.53), Karina Moreland in the triple jump (39-4) and Cassidy Hubert in the 800 (personal-best 2:09.49).
In other men's events, third-place finishes were recorded by Elliott Payne in the javelin (182-11), Kevin Schmitt in the high jump (6-6) and the 1,600-meter relay team of Wesley Salzman, Joey Souto, Quinton Alexander and Jonathan Chagnon (season-best 3:13.01).
Schmitt also placed fifth in the javelin (personal-best 178-0) while Alexander was fifth in the 800 (personal-best 1:52.06).
Earning fourth-place finishes were Lucas LaCambra in the 1,500 (personal-best 3:49.93), John Walther in the high jump (6-6) and Kevin Fernandez in the triple jump (personal-best 47-1).
At the Stanford Invitational on Friday at Cobb Track and Angell Field, Misty Diaz placed third and set a new personal best in Section 5 of the 1,500 with a time of 4:28.80 while Aidan McCarthy finished third in Section 3 of the 1,500 with a time of 3:47.39.
Four Mustangs competed in Section 2 of the men's 10,000 and all established new personal bests.
Jake Ritter finished fifth in 28:55.83 while Spencer Thurman was 11th in 29:13.81, John Bennett 17th in 29:32.04 and Xian Shively 22nd in 29:50.13.
On Saturday, Diaz finished seventh in Section 3 of the 800 with a season-best time of 2:13.05 while Sierra Brill placed 13th in Section 2 of the 10,000, clocked in 35:13.84.
Cal Poly will compete in the Bryan Clay Invitational (Azusa), Pacific Coast Invitational (Long Beach) and Mt. San Antonio College Relays (Walnut) in two weeks.
