FINAL RESULTS | VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- True freshman Kaylyn Noh claimed first place and, after overcoming a nine-stroke deficit over the final six holes, Cal Poly won a dramatic one-hole playoff to capture its second straight Big West Conference women's golf championship and automatic postseason bid Tuesday at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
Hawai'i held a nine-shot lead before playing the final six holes 13 over par with nine bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey with one birdie. Cal Poly, meanwhile, carded three birdies and seven bogeys over the same stretch to catch the Rainbow Wahine. Hawaii played the final three holes with three bogeys and 12 pars while the Mustangs posted one birdie and 14 pars with no bogeys to make up a late four-stroke deficit.
"We knew today was going to be tough," said Mustang head coach Sofie Aagaard. "Hawai'i is a strong team with great ball strikers, handling wind very well. I knew that they weren't going to lose the championship. Instead, we had to perform well and win it.
"Hole 14 was a big turning point for us," Aagaard added. "We had some missed and lost shots coming to the last five holes and, with 14 being a tough par three with a cross wind from left to right and a pond to the right, Hawaii had some big numbers and we got away with a couple of good scores."
The Rainbow Wahine had a double-bogey and triple-bogey on the 14th and was four-over-par on that hole Tuesday while Cal Poly scored two pars and three bogeys for a three-over-par total.
Noh birdied the 17th hole to cut the deficit to one and parred the 18th while Hawaii's Momo Sugiyama bogeyed the 18th to create the deadlock. Officially, Cal Poly and Hawai'i share the conference title, but a playoff was needed to determine the automatic qualifier for the NCAA playoffs. On the extra hole, the 382-yard, par-four 18th, there were five pairs -- the No. 5 players against each other followed by the No. 4s, etc.
Noh and Jensen Jalufka carded birdies while Caroline Cantlay, Elizabeth Scholtes and Kamille Dimayuga all posted pars for Cal Poly while Hawai'i recorded two pars and three bogeys on the playoff hole, giving the Mustangs the 14-18 advantage and the postseason bid. The Mustangs are Big West team champions for the second year in a row and earned the third title in Aagaard's seven seasons as head coach.
"We excelled in the last three holes just like yesterday and brought the tie," said Aagaard. "In the playoff, we rolled in two birdies and saved par on the rest. The shot execution in the playoff and the putting was impeccable and so fun to see our players perform when it really mattered."
Though Cal Poly could be sent to any of the six regional sites across the country, the regionals in the west will be hosted by Stanford and New Mexico on May 9-11. The Mustangs qualified for the Albuquerque Regional in 2017 and the Stanford Regional a year ago. The 2022 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship will be hosted by Arizona State at the Grayhawk Golf Club's Raptor Course in Scottsdale, Arizona, from May 20-25.
Noh is Cal Poly's second Big West individual title winner in women's golf. Stephanie Yocum claimed the crown in 2009, also at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
A graduate of Rocklin High School, Noh recorded four birdies and three bogeys in a final-round one-under-par 71, adding to her 73 and 72 on the first two days of the tournament. Her 54-hole even-par 216 aggregate bested UC Riverside's Kate Villegas by three strokes.
Playing five groups ahead of Noh, Villegas was the leader by two strokes until she played the back nine three over par. Noh finished more than an hour later and birdied four of her final 10 holes to win going away.
"Kaylyn Noh winning the conference championship at home as a freshman was impressive," said Aagaard. "Her competitiveness shone through in her performance in the last few holes in the last two rounds as well as her holing her birdie putt from 20 feet in the playoff. An impressive performance in her first conference championship."
Third place went to Cantlay at five over par while Tiffany Le of UC Riverside and Hyeonji Kang of Hawai'i shared fourth place at six over par.
Cal Poly's other scores on a windy Tuesday were a 77 for a 233 total and 14th place by Scholtes, a 79 for a 234 aggregate and 16th place by Jalufka and an 84 for a 245 total by Dimayuga for 34th place.
Cantlay and Noh shared first place in par-3 scoring at one over par while Jalufka was third at two over par. Noh also topped the field in par-4 scoring at three under par while Cantlay was third at two over par. In par-5 scoring, Cantlay and Noh shared ninth place with seven other golfers at two over par.
Riverside's Le carded the only eagle of the tournament. Noh led the field with her 12 birdies over three rounds while Cantlay was tied for first with Hawaii's Kang, each with 42 pars.
Noh and Cantlay were named to the Big West All-Tournament team along with Villegas, Le and Kang.
The Selection Show will air Wednesday, April 27, on the Golf Channel at 2 p.m.
