Mustangs Up to No. 11 in Rankings, Head to Palo Alto This Weekend

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- After going 4-2 at the Big West Challenge last weekend in Long Beach, the Cal Poly beach volleyball team moved up in the AVCA rankings to No. 11 this week.
The No. 11 Mustangs (14-10) are on the road in Palo Alto playing four matches this weekend. On Saturday, April 2 they will Santa Clara at 2 p.m. and No. 8 Stanford at 4 p.m. They will face Saint Mary's at 10 a.m. and UC Davis at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 3.
All of Cal Poly's No. 1-3 pairings are comprised of a true freshman and an upperclassman. The No. 1 pairing of freshman Ella Connor and redshirt senior Tia Miric are 16-7. Freshman Piper Ferch and red shirt junior Jayelin Lombard (15-9) are on a three-match winning streak at the No. 2 spot. The No. 3 pairing of freshman Peyton Dueck and graduate student Addison Hermstad are 14-2 and are also on a three-match winning streak.
The Broncos are 6-11 and on a three-match losing streak.
The Mustangs previously lost to No. 8 Stanford (11-5) this season by a score of 3-2.
Saint Mary's is 13-7 so far this season. The Gaels lead the all-time series 3-2 but the Mustangs have won each of the last two meetings.
This will be the second time in a week facing UC Davis. Last week in Long Beach, Cal Poly shutout UC Davis (9-10), 5-0.
Following this weekend, the Mustangs will be off until April 15-16 when they host No. 3 USC, No. 4 Florida State, No. 1 UCLA, and No. 5 LMU for the third annual Center of Effort Challenge at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex.
