No. 63 Mustangs Beat No. 75 Hawai’i in Big West Opener

HONOLULU — Sophomore Noah Berry (pictured) beat the 20th ranked singles player in the NCAA to help the Cal Poly men's tennis team open Big West play strong Thursday with a 4-3 road victory over No. 75 Hawai'i.
The No. 63 Mustangs, the reigning Big West regular season champions, move to 10-4 overall this season with the win. It snapped an eight-match win streak for the No. 75 Rainbow Warriors.
In doubles, Cal Poly's No. 2 pairing of graduate Hendrik Inno and redshirt sophomore Joe Leather started off with a 6-0 victory to move their record to 7-4 this year. The doubles point was clinched for the Mustangs after the No. 3 duo of Berry and redshirt sophomore Fernando Fonseca won their match, 6-2, to improve their record together to a team-best 8-2 this season and stretch their win streak to six in a row.
In singles, Hawai'i took a 2-1 dual match lead after getting wins at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots. Redshirt sophomore Colter Smith then tied it up after winning at the No. 3 spot in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5 over Karl Collins.
At the No. 2 spot, Joe Leather gave the Mustangs a 3-2 lead after beating Blaz Seric in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 to improve his record to 8-3 this season.
Berry then clinched the victory for Cal Poly after beating Andre Ilagan, who is ranked #20 in the country in singles, at the No. 1 spot in three sets despite dropping the first one, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. Berry is now 9-4 this season and has a 2-1 record against ranked opponents.
The Mustangs will be back in action for two more Big West road matches Sunday, April 3 at UC Irvine and Monday, April 4 at UC Riverside.
