FRESNO, Calif. -- A 293 total in the second round of the Fresno State Classic lifted Cal Poly three spots into a fourth-place tie Monday afternoon.
Another 293 Tuesday morning wasn't as fruitful as the Mustangs slipped a notch into fifth place in the final standings.
Coach Sofie Aagaard's Mustangs finished with a 21-over-par 885 aggregate at the Belmont Country Club, just four shots out of second place.
Five teams were bunched within five shots of each other in the battle for second place, including Cal Poly. UC Irvine was second at 881, Fresno State third at 883, San Francisco fourth at 884, the Mustangs fifth at 885 and Cal sixth at 886.
Hawai'i was the runaway winner with a one-over-par 865 aggregate.
Cal Poly's top individual finisher was Jensen Jalufka with a 71, 75 and 74 for a 220 total and 13th place alone. It is Jalufka's fourth top-20 finish this season and the seventh of her Mustang career.
Vanessa Wang and Caroline Cantlay shared 30th place with four other golfers, all at 224. Wang shot a 72 in the final round to jump 13 positions on the leaderboard while Cantlay moved up 19 spots with a final-round 70.
