No. 11 Mustangs Defeat Pair of Pac-12 Opponents Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly beach volleyball team finished up its home-opening weekend strong Saturday, collecting wins over Washington, 4-1, and Arizona State, 5-0, at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex to finish the weekend with a 3-1 record.
In the morning match against the Huskies, the Mustangs (5-7) got on the board first after the No. 3 pair of freshman Peyton Dueck and graduate transfer Addison Hermstad defeated Audra Wilmes and Paloma Bowman, 21-11, 21-16.
That was followed by a 21-8, 21-18 win at the No. 4 spot by redshirt junior Vanessa Roscoe and redshirt sophomore Josie Ulrich over Maeve Griffin and Ashley Shook to take a 2-0 lead.
The dual was clinched by the No. 1 duo of redshirt senior Tia Miric and freshman Ella Connor after they beat Washington's Natalie Robinson and Chloe Loreen, 21-18, 21-19.
Cal Poly's fourth point came via a win at the No. 2 spot by the pair of freshman Piper Ferch and redshirt junior Jayelin Lombard. They beat Scarlett Dahl and Kyra Petersen in three sets, 11-21, 21-12, 15-13.

In the afternoon match against the Sun Devils, Dueck and Hermstad continued their strong play from the No. 3 spot and once again scored the first point of the dual for the Mustangs. They beat ASU's Sarah Waters and Lila Bordis, 21-14, 21-15 to finish a perfect 4-0 on the weekend. They are now 5-1 as a pair this season.
Roscoe and Ulrich put the Cal Poly up 2-0 after beating Taryn Ames and Kate Fitzgerald at the No. 4 spot, 21-15, 21-18 to finish the day 2-0 together.

Later, it was once again Miric and Connor who clinched the dual for Cal Poly after a three-set comeback win at the No. 1 spot. After dropping the first set Lexi Sweeney and Cierra Flood, Miric and Connor won the next two 21-15, 15-10 to seal the victory. They also went a perfect 4-0 for the weekend and now have a team-best record of 8-4 this season.
Lombard and Ferch made it an undefeated day for them after picking up a 21-18, 16-21, 15-11 win over Anya Pemberton and Rylie Kael at the No. 4 spot.
The 5-0 sweep was completed by the No. 5 pair of redshirt junior Eleonore Johansen and sophomore Sam Strah after they pulled out a hard-fought battle over Maddy Salazar and Kylie Wickley 21-13, 29-31, 15-9.
The Mustangs will remain at home next week when they play a total of six matches at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex Sunday, March 20 and Monday, March 21.
