ARLINGTON, Texas -- Designated hitter Matt Lopez capped a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a grand slam in the seventh inning and shortstop Brooks Lee added a three-run home run as Cal Poly earned a split of a non-conference doubleheader against Missouri State with a 14-12 victory in the nightcap Sunday.
Mason Hull's grand slam in the sixth inning and Will Duff's three-run triple in the eighth lifted Missouri State from a 5-0 deficit to an 8-5 victory in the opener.
The split gave Cal Poly its first series win of the 2022 season, two games to one, and improved the Mustangs' record to 4-3. The host Bears are 3-4.
The series was played at Clay Gould Ballpark on the campus of the University of Texas at Arlington due to wintry weather forecasts in Springfield, Missouri.
In the nightcap, Cal Poly scored early and often, leading 4-0, 7-3 and 10-4 midway through the contest. It was 10-6 when Lopez smashed his slam to left-center field, giving the Mustangs a 14-6 cushion in the seventh.
Missouri State battled back with three runs in both the eighth and ninth innings, bringing the potential game-tying run to the plate with one out.
True freshman Noah Larkin, pitching in his first college game, was summoned from the bullpen and induced Mason Greer and Mason Hull to hit ground balls to Lee, one resulting in a force play at second base and the other thrown to first base to end the game.
Larkin earned his first save while Derek True (1-1) earned the win with two scoreless innings in relief of starter Kaden Sheedy. The loss went to Bears starter Dan Merrill (1-1) as he surrendered seven runs (four earned) and seven hits over 2 2/3 innings.
Lopez collected three of Cal Poly's 14 hits while Lee, Ryan Stafford, Joe Yorke and Brett Borgogno each had two hits. Tate Samuelson contributed a two-run single. Lee produced a double to go with his three-run home run, his first of the year, giving the Mustangs their 10-4 lead in the fifth.
Missouri State outhit Cal Poly 16-14, led by third baseman Grant Wood and right fielder Dakota Kotowski, each with three hits. One of Kotowski's hits was a two-run home run.
In the opener, the Mustangs built a 5-0 lead with a run in the second, two in the third and single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
A groundout by Lee scored the first Mustang run. Yorke's sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Collin Villegas made it 3-0 in the third.
Villegas homered in the fifth and Mattias Haas grounded into a double play, scoring a run in the sixth for the 5-0 lead.
Hull's grand slam in the bottom of the sixth cut the Mustang advantage to 5-4 and Duff gave Missouri State the lead for the first time this weekend with a bases-loaded triple to right. A sacrifice fly cashed in the final run.
Villegas had three of Cal Poly's seven hits and Lee added two singles.
Travis Weston pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on the grand slam with three walks and seven strikeouts. Jason Franks (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing the three runners who scored on the triple to reach base.
Greer had three hits for Missouri State and Duff, Drake Baldwin and Hull each had two. The win went to Trey Ziegenbein (1-1), who pitched three scoreless innings in relief.
Lee was 6-f0r-11 with five RBIs in the series. Villegas, Haas, Samuelson, Lopez and Stafford all had four hits as Cal Poly raised its team batting average to .298.
The Mustangs will host Portland (6-1 after winning its series at San Jose State) on Wednesday night at 6 before going back out on the road to play a three-game series at UNLV (4-3 after defeating Hawai'i once and San Diego twice in the Tony Gwynn Legacy) on Friday through Sunday.
