SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Ty Saunders' RBI single to left field tied the game and Portland scored the go-ahead run on a balk as the Pilots scored two in the ninth to beat Cal Poly 5-4 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday night inside Baggett Stadium.
Cal Poly, which has led all eight games in at least in the sixth inning or later, fell to 4-4 with Wednesday's loss. Portland improved to 7-1, its best start in 11 years.
Cal Poly jumped to a 4-0 lead thanks to the bat of shortstop Brooks Lee. His run-scoring double in the first inning and three-run double in the second frame staked the Mustangs to their four-run advantage.
Portland rallied for two runs in the third, one in the fourth and two in the ninth to even its all-time series against Cal Poly at 2-2. The Mustangs won a three-game series against the Pilots in 2002.
Cal Poly had a chance to break the game open in the eighth. Leading 4-3, the Mustangs loaded the bases with two outs before a strikeout ended the threat.
Hits were even at eight apiece. Saunders finished with three hits while Briley Knight and Nich Klemp each had two hits for Portland. One of Knight's hits was a solo home run in the fourth inning, his second of the year.
Lee was 3-for-4 at the plate for Cal Poly with a single and two doubles, lifting his average for the season to .500. Joe Yorke added two hits.
Peter Allegro (1-0), the last of four pitchers used by Portland, earned the win by securing the final four outs. Dylan Villalobos (0-1) took the loss, allowing the go-ahead run in the ninth.
Freshman Noah Larkin tossed three scoreless innings in relief for Cal Poly with four strikeouts.
The Mustangs go back out on the road this weekend for a three-game non-conference series at UNLV. The Rebels are 4-4 after falling 12-9 to Utah on Tuesday.
