Cal Poly Allows Several Leads to Slip Away in 10-Inning Loss to UNLV
3/4/2022 11:20:00 PM | Baseball
In dropping to 4-5 on the year, Cal Poly has held the lead in the sixth inning or later in all nine games this season. The Mustangs squandered a 5-0 advantage in an 8-5 loss to Missouri State last Sunday and a 4-0 lead in a 5-4 setback against Portland on Wednesday.
UNLV (5-4) scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to catch the Mustangs at 4-4 Friday night and, after Cal Poly scored twice in the top of the 10th for a 6-4 cushion, the Rebels responded with three in the bottom of the 10th for the win.
With a double and two singles, Mustang shortstop Brooks Lee lifted his batting average to .529. Catcher Ryan Stafford belted his first collegiate home run and also singled while third baseman Tate Samuelson and second baseman Brett Borgogno both contributed a single and double as Cal Poly collected 13 hits.
UNLV's 14 hits included two each by Rylan Charles, Austin Kryszczuk, Joey Walls, Edarian Williams and Gianni Horvat.
Nick Rupp (1-0) earned the victory, tossing 3 2/3 innings in relief with six strikeouts, while Kyle Scott (1-1) suffered the loss. Mustang starter Drew Thorpe struck out 12 over seven innings, allowing three runs and seven hits with no walks. The right-hander has struck out 10 or more batters in each of his three starts this season and seven times in his Cal Poly career.
Taison Corio scored on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Reagan Doss gave Cal Poly a 2-0 lead in the second. Stafford's home run in the third resulted in a 3-0 Mustang lead.
Lee's run-scoring single made it 4-2 in the seventh inning before UNLV scored single runs in the last two innings to force extras.
Brett Borgogno's single off the glove of UNLV second baseman Williams tallied two runs and a 6-4 Mustang lead in the top of the 10th. UNLV won the game in the bottom of the 10th on Eric Bigani's RBI single and a pair of wild pitches.
The win was the first by UNLV over Cal Poly in the seven-game history of the series.
Second game of the series will be played Saturday at 1:05 p.m. with southpaw Travis Weston pitching for Cal Poly. Sunday's series finale starts at 12:05 p.m.
