Cal Poly Scores Eight Runs in Final Two Innings for 15-11 Victory
3/5/2022 5:45:00 PM | Baseball
The win evened the records of both teams at 5-5 and evened the three-game series at a game apiece heading into Sunday's noon finale.
Cal Poly's inability to hold late leads surfaced once again as the Mustangs held a 7-4 advantage after 6 1/2 innings of play only to see the Rebels score six times in the seventh for a 10-7 cushion.
This time, however, Cal Poly rallied for three runs in the eighth and five more in the ninth to post the victory.
Left fielder Ryan Stafford hit a two-run home run and shortstop Brooks Lee added a solo shot in the eighth to tie the game at 10-10.
The ninth-inning Mustang rally featured a two-run single by third baseman Tate Samuelson, a two-run double by first baseman Joe Yorke and a run-scoring double by Matt Lopez.
Jason Franks (2-1), Cal Poly's third pitcher of the game, secured the final seven outs for the win, allowing one run and two hits with four strikeouts.
Lee produced his eighth straight multiple-hit game with a double and home run. Lee is 19-for-30 (.633) with seven doubles and two home runs over the eight-game stretch after a 1-for-8 start versus Washington.
Lee, however, struck out for the first time this season on his 45th plate appearance. He also established a new single-season school record with his seventh and eighth intentional walks of 2022.
Stafford, who like Lee also struck out for the first time this week, in Wednesday's game against Portland, was 4-for-6 Saturday, his first four-hit game as a Mustang, with his second home run of the season, a double and two singles.
Samuelson was 3-for-6 with his first home run of the year, the 17th of his Mustang career, along with a single and double, driving in four runs, while Yorke was 3-for-4 with two walks, two doubles and three RBIs.
Lopez was 3-for-6 with two singles, a double and one RBI while catcher Collin Villegas doubled twice and knocked in one run. Brett Borgogno, the ninth hitter in the Cal Poly batting order, hit a solo home run in the third inning, his first as a Mustang.
UNLV's 15 hits included four by Austin Kryszczuk and three off the bat of Diego Alarcon. Alarcon doubled twice and Kryszczuk added one double. Eric Bigani and Austin Pfeiffer both hit solo home runs for the Rebels.
Sophomore right-hander Kaden Sheedy (1-0, 7.00 ERA) will start for Cal Poly in Sunday's series finale, facing UNLV sophomore southpaw Noah Mattera (1-0, 5.40 ERA).
