UNLV Clinches Three-Game Series Against Cal Poly with 15-3 Win

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- UNLV shattered a 2-2 tie with 10 unanswered runs in the middle innings and went on to defeat Cal Poly 15-3 in the finale of a three-game non-conference baseball series Sunday afternoon inside Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
Trailing 2-0, Cal Poly (5-6) scored twice in the third frame. Reagan Doss and Brett Borgogno singled to open the inning. Ryan Stafford's sacrifice fly scored Doss and Tate Samuelson singled to drive home Borgogno.
The rest of the game was all UNLV (6-5) as the Rebels scored four times in the bottom of the third to break the 2-2 deadlock and added one in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth for a 12-2 cushion.
Cal Poly scored its final run in the seventh on a leadoff home run by Matt Lopez, his second of the year. UNLV capped the scoring with three in the eighth.
Samuelson and Lopez each had two of Cal Poly's seven hits. UNLV's 19 hits included four each by Hank Zeisler and Joey Walls as they combined for five RBIs. Edarian Williams added a three-run home run among his three hits and knocked in a total of five runs.
Mustang starter Kaden Sheedy (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing six runs and seven hits over two-plus innings. He struck out four. Southpaw Noah Mattera (2-0) earned the win with seven innings of work on the mound, allowing three runs and seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Cal Poly will play its next eight games at Baggett Stadium, starting Tuesday night with San Jose State at 6 p.m. The Mustangs also will host Harvard for four games next weekend and open Big West Conference play in two weeks against CSUN at home.
