Mustangs Hold Off San Diego State 4-2 for Fourth Straight Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Redshirt sophomore Joe Leather won a third set tiebreaker to clinch Cal Poly's 4-2 dual match victory over San Diego State Sunday at Mustang Tennis Complex. The Mustangs (5-1) have now won four straight matches and finished their season-opening six match homestand with a 5-1 record. It is the best start through the first six matches of a season since 2018 when they also started 5-1. Cal Poly took the doubles point over the Aztecs (2-4) to start off the match. The Mustangs' No. 1 duo of Hendrik Inno and Joe Leather won their match 6-4 before the No. 3 pairing of Noah Berry and Fernando Fonseca clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win. Inno and Leather are now 4-1 together this season. Berry and Fonseca improved their record to 2-0 as a duo. In singles, Berry continued his winning ways, taking down San Diego State's Joe Tyler in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 to remain unbeaten so far this year at 6-0. After the Aztecs won at the No. 3 spot to make it 2-1, Gary Vardanyan won his match at the No. 6 spot in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 over Judson Blair to put Cal Poly ahead 3-1. Vardanyan is now 4-1 this season in singles. San Diego State then won at the No. 5 spot to cut the lead to 3-2 as both remaining matches at the No. 2 spot and No. 4 spot went into third set tiebreakers. At the No. 2 spot, Leather finished his match first after winning his third set tiebreaker 7-2 to complete a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(2) victory over Johannes Seeman to clinch the dual for Cal Poly. Leather is also now 4-1 in singles this year. After having their first six matches of the season at home, the Mustangs will now hit the road for their next four matches. They will travel to Las Vegas to take on UNLV Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. That will be followed by a three-match tournament in Tempe, Ariz. Feb. 25-27.
