Mustangs Take Down LMU 5-2 to Earn Third Straight Victory

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sophomore Noah Berry had the dual-clinching singles win to cap a hard-fought battle for Cal Poly as the Mustangs defeated LMU Friday 5-2 at Mustang Tennis Complex to earn their third consecutive win.
All six singles matches went three sets and there were a combined three tiebreakers during the matches.
The Mustangs (4-1) started off by taking the doubles point over the Lions (1-5). Cal Poly's No. 1 pairing of Hendrik Inno and Joe Leather won their match 6-3 before Berry and redshirt sophomore Fernando Fonseca teamed up at the No. 3 spot, winning 6-4 to clinch the doubles point.
Inno and Leather are now 3-1 on the season together while it was the first victory as a duo for Fonseca and Berry.
In singles, Leather got the Mustangs going with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot to put Cal Poly ahead 2-0. Leather is now 3-1 on the season.
Redshirt sophomore Colter Smith later put Cal Poly up 3-0 after a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 slot.
LMU then picked up wins at the No. 3 and No. 5 spots to cut the Mustangs lead to 3-2 before Berry completed his three set comeback win from the No. 1 spot 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-4 to clinch the dual for Cal Poly. Berry is now a perfect 5-0 to start the season in singles.
Also picking up a win was redshirt junior Gary Vardanyan at the No. 6 spot via a third set tiebreaker. He won his match 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) to improve his record this year to 3-1.
The Mustangs will look to win their fourth consecutive match Sunday when they host San Diego State at 11 a.m.
