SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis program announced that Sean Ferguson, Raz Haviv, and Wian Roothman have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their athletic and academic careers at Cal Poly. They will join the Mustangs in in the fall of 2023.
Ferguson, a native of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., is ranked as a four-star recruit and the 87th ranked recruit overall in the class by TennisRecruiting.net and was a league champion at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School.
"Sean is a top talent coming out of Southern California for the class of 2023," head coach Nick Carless said of Ferguson. "He's a great student-athlete, very academic, quick on the court, has outstanding ground strokes and competes with the right mentality needed to be successful in collegiate tennis! We are excited to have him join the Mustang family."
Ferguson, who plans to major in engineering, said he chose Cal Poly because of the "great team atmosphere, coaches, location, and balance between academics and athletics."
Haviv, from Ramat Gan, Israel, has been a member of the Israeli National Team and has won multiple junior tournaments. He's won the Israeli U14 Championship and the U18 National Championship in 2019 among others. He has two uncles who played college tennis in the United States, one at NYU and the other at Columbia.
"We're super excited to have Raz as the third edition to our recruiting class," Carless said. "He's consistently been one of the top players out of Israel which produces tons of talent. He plays big and physical which should help him translate well to the college tennis game."
Haviv plans to major in Business Administration and chose Cal Poly because of the "good tennis team and coach, good academics, location, and weather."
Roothman, from Johannesburg, South Africa, is the No. 1 ranked junior player in South Africa and held an overall ITF ranking as high as No. 244.
"We are excited to have our first South African joining the program since Coach De Jager graduated in 2014," Carless said of Roothman. "Wian is one of the best juniors in South Africa, has a big game, effortless power and all the weapons needed to compete at the highest levels of D1 tennis. He will be a great addition to our program and couldn't be more excited to get him to the Central Coast."
Roothman, who plans to major in business administration, said he chose to come all the way to Cal Poly because of the coaches and team, 'Learn by Doing' academic philosophy, and the location.
