Strong Second Quarter Not Enough as Cal Poly Falls to UC Davis
10/29/2022 7:28:00 PM | Football
DAVIS, Calif. -- Ulonzo Gilliam caught eight passes for 66 yards and notched his 20th career 100-yard game rushing for 136 yards and two touchdowns to lead UC Davis to a 59-17 victory over Cal Poly in a Big Sky Conference football game Saturday afternoon at UC Davis Health Stadium.
Gilliam, who surpassed the 4,000-yard mark in career rushing earlier this season, scored on runs of 59 and one yards in the first half for UC Davis, who surpassed the 50-point mark for the third straight week since its bye week earlier this month.
UC Davis has won three straight games after a 1-4 start, evening its overall record at 4-4 and improving to 3-2 in Big Sky games. Cal Poly falls to 1-7 and 0-5 with its sixth straight loss overall and sixth consecutive defeat at the hands of UC Davis in the series dating back to 1939.
Cal Poly scored all of its points in the second quarter, trimming UC Davis' early 21-0 lead to 28-17. The Aggies, however, scored the final 24 points of the game.
In addition to the three scoring marches in the second period, the Mustangs drove into UC Davis territory on four other occasions, but interceptions by the Aggies halted two of the drives and Cal Poly turned the ball over on downs twice as well. The Mustangs, who had five turnovers in each of their last two games, committed four more turnovers Saturday.

Cal Poly's scores in the second quarter were two touchdown passes by Spencer Brasch and a 36-yard field goal by Jaden Ohlsen.
Brasch's 28-yard toss to Giancarlo Woods with 10:15 to play in the period capped an 83-yard, six-play drive. Brasch was 4-for-5 on the drive for 81 yards, including a 34-yard pass from Brasch to Chris Coleman on first down and a 14-yarder to Josh Cuevas on third down.
Brasch also hit Coleman on a six-yard touchdown pass with 5:49 to go in the first half. That 35-yard, seven-play drive was set up by UC Davis' first lost fumble of the season which was forced by David Meyer and recovered by Soni Finau.
Ohlsen's field goal with 1:54 to go in the second quarter ended a 61-yard, nine-play drive that was extended by three Brasch completions of 16 and 13 yards to Coleman and 21 to Zedakiah Centers.
Brasch surpassed the 300-yard passing mark for the fourth time this season, completing 29 of 48 passes for 359 yards and two touchdowns.
Coleman finished with 10 catches for 125 yards, becoming the first Mustang receiver to reach double figures in receptions in a single game in 15 years. Ramses Barden caught 10 passes versus Idaho State in 2007.
Josh Cuevas added five catches and Centers three.
Cal Poly's 69-yard rushing attack included 56 yards on 13 carries by freshman Paul Holyfield Jr.
UC Davis amassed 682 yards in total offense -- 425 in the air and 257 on the ground.
Miles Hastings connected on 22 of 27 passes for 425 yards and four touchdowns for a quarterback rating of 262.6.
Meyer collected 12 tackles (11 solo) to lead Cal Poly defensively. Elijah Ponder earned the lone Mustang sack and Donovan Saunders garnered his second career interception as a Mustang.
Cal Poly plays its final road game of the 2022 season next Saturday at Montana. The Grizzlies (5-3, 2-3 Big Sky) suffered its third straight loss after a 5-0 start, falling 24-21 at Weber State on Saturday. Malik Flowers returned a kickoff 100 yards for Montana with 5:43 to play to make it a three-point game but Weber State ran out the clock for the win.
The Mustangs play their final two games of the year at home, hosting Montana State on Nov. 12 and Portland State on Nov. 19.
